Book Review: A Shade of Vampire by Bella Forrest

Genre: Young Adult (Paranormal Romance)
Date Published: December 14, 2012
Publisher: Self

The Blurb:
On the evening of Sofia Claremont's 17th birthday, she is sucked into a nightmare from which she cannot wake.

A quiet evening walk along a beach brings her face to face with a dangerous pale creature that craves much more than her blood.

She is kidnapped to an island where the sun is eternally forbidden to shine.

An island uncharted by any map and ruled by the most powerful vampire coven on the planet. She wakes here as a slave, a captive in chains.

Sofia's life takes a thrilling and terrifying turn when she is the one selected out of hundreds of girls to join the harem of Derek Novak, the dark royal Prince.

Despite his addiction to power and obsessive thirst for her blood, Sofia soon realizes that the safest place on the island is within his quarters, and she must do all within her power to win him over if she is to survive even one more night.

Will she succeed? ...or is she destined to the same fate that all other girls have met at the hands of the Novaks?.

My Review:
A Shade of Vampire by Bella Forrest is a fast paced, short story that introduces us to a new community of vampires. Since it was a short story, I didn't expect to be so quickly and completely swept into it's world, but that's just what happened. The character building was top notch, and I felt like I was really getting to know them as the perspectives changed between Sofia and Derek. Their relationship was addictive, but there was more to the story than that, and this book feels like it's building toward something huge in the world of vampires. A Shade of Vampire by Bella Forrest is intoxicating, and I enjoyed reading under its influence. I am a fast fan of this series already, in fact my only complaint(if you can even call it one) would be that it was so short. I want more!

Book Review: Don't Call Me Angel by Alicia Wright Brewster

Genre: Young Adult (Urban Fantasy)
Date Published: June 15, 2012
Publisher: Dragonfairy Press

The Blurb:
After crawling her way out of Hell, Six is ready to cast aside her angel wings and all the responsibilities that come with them. But Earth is not as peaceful as she imagined it. Demons, dark angels, and other hell-beasties escaped before her, and they're not as content as she is to live a quiet life on Earth. A fellow angel who escaped Hell with her commits a series of soul-murders, destroying human souls so they can't go to the afterlife. Although Six has conflicting feelings about humans, she goes after the other angel to keep their escape a secret from the one she fears most.

My Review:
Don't Call Me Angel is the prequel to what will be the Forsaken Series by Alicia Wright Brewster. I liked the idea behind this book, but I needed a little bit more from the book to enjoy it. My issues started once Six makes her escape. When she makes it to Earth, she has no clothing on and can't hide her wings. The humans she walks by either look at her with lust or are offended by her lack of clothing. Did any of them notice her wings at all? They sure didn't seem to. I would have expected some confusion or fear rather than going straight to lust and offense. Maybe I'm the weird one. I also never felt a connection with the characters. I would have liked some kind of background or details or something to give me reason to like the characters and want to read more. I think the potential is there for a great story. In the end, I don't really know much more than what is already stated in the book's blurb. This one just wasn't for me, but that doesn't mean you won't like it.

About the Author:
I'm a mild-mannered lady of average height and above average paranormal obsession. By day, I work in an office. At night, I'm an author, an electronics junkie, and a secret superhero. (Please don't ask what my superpower is. That's not very polite.)

In my virtually non-existent free time, I love to read, watch movies, and eat food. I am particularly fond of the food-eating and make a point to perform this task at least three times per day, usually more.

Top 10 of 2012: Top 10 Books I’m Looking Forward To in 2013

Top 10 Books I’m Looking Forward To in 2013!
This is definitely my favorite Top 10 of the week. There are sooo many books coming out in 2013! What's a girl to do?

Splintered by A.G. Howard
Expected Publication: Jan. 1. 2013

The Blurb:
This stunning debut captures the grotesque madness of a mystical under-land, as well as a girl’s pangs of first love and independence. Alyssa Gardner hears the whispers of bugs and flowers—precisely the affliction that landed her mother in a mental hospital years before. This family curse stretches back to her ancestor Alice Liddell, the real-life inspiration for Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. Alyssa might be crazy, but she manages to keep it together. For now.

When her mother’s mental health takes a turn for the worse, Alyssa learns that what she thought was fiction is based in terrifying reality. The real Wonderland is a place far darker and more twisted than Lewis Carroll ever let on. There, Alyssa must pass a series of tests, including draining an ocean of Alice’s tears, waking the slumbering tea party, and subduing a vicious bandersnatch, to fix Alice’s mistakes and save her family. She must also decide whom to trust: Jeb, her gorgeous best friend and secret crush, or the sexy but suspicious Morpheus, her guide through Wonderland, who may have dark motives of his own.

Everbound (Everneath #2) by Brodi Ashton
Expected publication: Jan. 22, 2013

The Blurb:
Nikki Beckett could only watch as her boyfriend, Jack, sacrificed himself to save her, taking her place in the Tunnels of the Everneath for eternity — a debt that should’ve been hers. She’s living a borrowed life, and she doesn’t know what to do with the guilt. And every night Jack appears in her dreams, lost and confused and wasting away.

Desperate for answers, Nikki turns to Cole, the immortal bad boy who wants to make her his queen — and the one person least likely to help. But his heart has been touched by everything about Nikki, and he agrees to assist her in the only way he can: by taking her to the Everneath himself.

Nikki and Cole descend into the Everneath, only to discover that their journey will be more difficult than they’d anticipated — and more deadly. But Nikki vows to stop at nothing to save Jack — even if it means making an incredible sacrifice of her own.

In this enthralling sequel to Everneath, Brodi Ashton tests the bonds of destiny and explores the lengths we’ll go to for the ones we love.

The Prey (The Hunt#2) by Andrew Fukuda
Expected publication: Feb. 5, 2013

The Blurb:
For Gene and the remaining humans—or hepers—death is just a heartbeat away. On the run and hunted by society, they must find a way to survive in The Vast... and avoid the hungry predators tracking them in the dark. But they’re not the only things following Gene. He’s haunted by the girl he left behind and his burgeoning feelings for Sissy, the human girl at his side.

When they discover a refuge of exiled humans living high in the mountains, Gene and his friends think they’re finally safe. Led by a group of intensely secretive elders, the civilisation begins to raise more questions than answers. A strict code of behaviour is the rule, harsh punishments are meted out, young men are nowhere to be found—and Gene begins to wonder if the world they’ve entered is just as evil as the one they left behind. As life at the refuge grows more perilous, he and Sissy only grow closer. In an increasingly violent world, all they have is each other... if they can only stay alive.

Scarlet (Lunar Chronicles #2) by Marissa Meyer
Expected publication: Feb. 5, 2013

The Blurb:
Cinder returns in the second thrilling installment of the New York Times-bestselling Lunar Chronicles. She’s trying to break out of prison—even though if she succeeds, she’ll be the Commonwealth’s most wanted fugitive.

Halfway around the world, Scarlet Benoit’s grandmother is missing. It turns out there are many things Scarlet doesn’t know about her grandmother and the grave danger she has lived in her whole life. When Scarlet encounters Wolf, a street fighter who may have information as to her grandmother’s whereabouts, she has no choice but to trust him, though he clearly has a few dark secrets of his own.

As Scarlet and Wolf work to unravel one mystery, they find another when they cross paths with Cinder. Together, they must stay one step ahead of the vicious Lunar Queen who will do anything to make Prince Kai her husband, her king, her prisoner.

Broken Wings (Angel Eyes Trilogy #2) by Shannon Dittemore
Expected publication: Feb. 19, 2013

The Blurb:
Giant angels with metal wings and visible song. A blind demon restored from the pit of darkness. And a girl who has never felt more broken.

Brielle sees the world as it really is: a place where the Celestial exists side by side with human reality. But in the aftermath of a supernatural showdown, her life begins to crumble. Her boyfriend, Jake, is keeping something from her—something important. Her overprotective father has started drinking again. He’s dating a much younger woman who makes Brielle’s skin crawl, and he’s downright hostile toward Jake. Haunting nightmares keep Brielle from sleeping, and flashes of Celestial vision keep her off kilter.

What she doesn’t know is that she’s been targeted. The Prince of Darkness himself has heard of the boy with healing in his hands and of the girl who sees through the Terrestrial Veil. When he plucks the blind demon, Damien, from the fiery chasm and sends him back to Earth with new eyes, the stage is set for a cataclysmic battle of good versus evil.

Then Brielle unearths the truth about her mother’s death and she must question everything she ever thought was true.

Brielle has no choice. She knows evil forces are converging and will soon rain their terror down upon the town of Stratus. She must master the weapons she’s been given. She must fight.

But can she fly with broken wings?

Requiem (Delirium #3) by Lauren Oliver
Expected publication: Mar. 5, 2013

The Blurb:
Now an active member of the resistance, Lena has been transformed. The nascent rebellion that was under way in Pandemonium has ignited into an all-out revolution in Requiem, and Lena is at the center of the fight.

After rescuing Julian from a death sentence, Lena and her friends fled to the Wilds. But the Wilds are no longer a safe haven—pockets of rebellion have opened throughout the country, and the government cannot deny the existence of Invalids. Regulators now infiltrate the borderlands to stamp out the rebels, and as Lena navigates the increasingly dangerous terrain, her best friend, Hana, lives a safe, loveless life in Portland as the fiancée of the young mayor. Requiem is told from both Lena’s and Hana’s points of view. The two girls live side by side in a world that divides them until, at last, their stories converge.

The Eternity Cure (Blood of Eden #2)

by Julie Kagawa

Expected publication:
 Apr. 23, 2013

The Blurb:
Allison Sekemoto has vowed to rescue her creator, Kanin, who is being held hostage and tortured by the psychotic vampire Sarren. The call of blood leads her back to the beginning—New Covington and the Fringe, and a vampire prince who wants her dead yet may become her wary ally.

Even as Allie faces shocking revelations and heartbreak like she’s never known, a new strain of the Red Lung virus that decimated humanity is rising to threaten human and vampire alike.

Goddess (Starcrossed #3) by Josephine Angelini

Expected publication:
 May. 28, 2013

The Blurb:
After accidentally unleashing the gods from their captivity on Olympus, Helen must find a way to re-imprison them without starting a devastating war. But the gods are angry, and their thirst for blood already has a body count.

To make matters worse, the Oracle reveals that a diabolical Tyrant is lurking among them, which drives a wedge between the once-solid group of friends. As the gods use the Scions against one another, Lucas’s life hangs in the balance. Still unsure whether she loves him or Orion, Helen is forced to make a terrifying decision, for war is coming to her shores.

In Josephine Angelini’s compelling conclusion to the masterfully woven Starcrossed trilogy, a goddess must rise above it all to change a destiny that’s been written in the stars. With worlds built just as fast as they crumble, love and war collide in an all-out battle that will leave no question unanswered and no heart untouched.

(This one's definitely a naughty boy. But is he the villain? And does it really matter? *sigh*)

Ariston

Blood Twist Blog Tour: A Review of Blood Twist by Bonnie Erina Wheeler

Genre: Young Adult (Paranormal Romance)
Published: August 25, 2012
Publisher: Tribute Books

The Blurb:
From Bonnie Erina Wheeler, the author who brought you Fate Fixed, comes the second installment in the Erris Coven Series, Blood Twist: An Erris Coven Novel, Book 2. Find out what happens to the Erris Coven when Lexie's BFF Liz comes to town. Braden Murphy knew he was going to die. There was a twist to his family secret – one that was forced upon him from the time he was a child. For years he envisioned his final days and tried to be strong enough to leave his family. Now that it was time, he was ready to make good on a deadly promise. Except for one unexpected glitch, a raven haired beauty insisted on joining him.

Liz Sanders thought her bestfriend’s stepfamily was weird, but she never would have guessed they were werewolves. Now Liz must travel with a secretive half-vampire in search of a lycanthropy cure. Landing in a nest full of blood thirsty vampires wasn’t on her agenda, but neither was falling in love.

Braden is tempting, but Liz’s feelings for him are complicated. She wishes he would open up about his past and give her a reason to trust him. Just when Liz thinks she can let her guard down, she’s forced to confront the evil that has been stalking Braden’s past for years.

Death is here and ready to destroy everything they've fought to protect.

My Review:
Blood Twist is book two of the Erris Coven Series by Bonnie Erina Wheeler. I love how with the first book,  Fate Fixed, we got Lexie and Torin's story, and now in Blood Twist we get Liz and Braden's story. Blood Twist takes off where Fate Fixed ended, so you will definitely want to read Fate Fixed first, if you haven't already. These books build upon each other. The title got it right with this one, because there are unexpected twists and the creepy new villain is super twisted. I couldn't read it fast enough. I didn't feel the relationship was as deeply connected as the relationship between Lexie and Torin, and I missed that, but there also might be a reason for that which I can't mention here. For this reason, I think we'll see more of these two in upcoming books. I'm really rooting for them! I highly recommend this series. It's addictive!

Haven't read Fate Fixed yet? Check out my review!
