Playing Catch Up! Unforgiven by Lauren Kate

Playing Catch Up has really been helping me through my ever growing TBR list. I'd like to welcome all other blogs to participate too! If you do, be sure to post your links in the comments section. I'd love to see your Playing Catch Up Reviews, and I'm sure others would too!! *wink*

Want to know more about Playing Catch Up? I'll tell you all about it here!

Unforgiven (Fallen #5) by Lauren Kate
Genre: Young Adult (Paranormal/Fantasy Romance)
Date Published: November 10, 2015
Publisher: Delacorte Press

It’s the book FALLEN fans have been waiting for: Cam’s story, the brooding, bad-boy dark angel readers love.

High school can be hell.

Cam knows what it’s like to be haunted. He’s spent more time in Hell than any angel ever should. And his freshest Hell is high school, where Lilith, the girl he can’t stop loving, is serving out a punishment for his crimes.

Cam made a bet with Lucifer: he has fifteen days to convince the only girl who really matters to him to love him again. If he succeeds, Lilith will be allowed back into the world, and they can live their lives together. But if he fails…there’s a special place in Hell just for him.

Tick-tock.

Spread your wings and cry as bad boy dark angel Cam finally reveals his anguished heart in the epic new FALLEN novel, UNFORGIVEN.

Unforgiven is the fifth book in the Fallen Series by Lauren Kate. Unforgiven gives us Cam's story. I always felt this draw to Cam, so I'm glad he's gotten his own book. I enjoyed the series in the beginning, then gradually became disenchanted with it as it went on, but Unforgiven drew me back in, and I enjoyed it quite a bit. I actually forgot all about Lilith being in the original story(if she was), so I can't remember how I felt about her then. It's been so long since I read it, but I enjoyed reading her character and learning her history along with Cam's.  I'm glad I finally read this one!

Book Review: Descent by Cameo Renae

Descent (Hidden Wings 0.5) Cameo Renae
Genre: Young Adult (Paranormal Romance)
Date Published: May 15, 2013
Publisher: Crushing Hearts and Black Butterfly Publishin

In the beginning… the start of it all.

Deceit.

Betrayal.

The Fall.

Take a journey back in time, to a place where Emma’s lineage begins, and where answers lie in unraveling secrets of the past. This is a story of forbidden love, an unbreakable bond, and the start of a dark adventure that will fill your heart with many emotions.

Decent is the prequel to the Hidden Wings series by Cameo Renae. This book told the back story of Emma's grandparents and parents. I learned their thoughts and what they felt. It was full of dangers and forbidden love. I like knowing Emma's full history. It really brings her to life even more. I read the first two books in this series before reading this prequel, and I'd definitely recommend others to read it in the same order to fully appreciate how the secrets and mysteries reveal themselves and how Emma's story is told.

Descent by Cameo Renae was kindly provided to me by the author for review. The opinions are my own.

Lucifer. His voice was like the softest of velvet and the sweetest of honey, filling the Heavens with the most glorious melodies. His music reverberated through every cell of your being; filling, lulling, and entrancing you with his song and worship.

Because of this, he was praised by all that surrounded him. But, it would also be that constant praise which allowed pride to seep into the tiniest crevices of his heart. Pride slowly turned to jealousy. Jealousy turned to hate, and it was that hate which began to alter and callous his once pure heart.

As time endured, Lucifer’s pride, his jealousy, his hate, and finally his deceit… led to THE FALL.

Review & Excerpts from She Kissed a Vampire by Carol Van Atta! Plus Guest Post!

She Kissed a Vampire (Werewolves of the West, #2) by Carol Van Atta
Genre:
Adult Fiction (Paranormal/Urban Fantasy Romance)
Date Published:  December 16, 2013
Publisher: Cambridge Press US

Best selling author Melanie Larson’s relationship with her friend, Chloe Carpenter, is bleak. Falsely accused of murder, Chloe’s future rests in the hands of her mate, Zane Marshall, and the Pacific Pack’s purebred werewolves. In an effort to help, Melanie joins forces with the pack and soon discovers the monsters she writes about in her paranormal novels really do go bump in the night.

As Chloe struggles with legal troubles, an unwanted blood bond with a master vampire, and a reunion with her mate, Melanie untangles the attention of multiple supernatural suitors determined to claim her as their own. Strangely attracted to a brazen vampire, she must decide if the blurred line between passion and pain is worth crossing.

Werewolves, vampires, and fae royalty race to unearth an ancient artifact with the power to extend their existence. Can Chloe and Melanie restore their friendship in time to stop magical mayhem from ruining everything they have worked so hard to redeem?

She Kissed a Vampire is the second book in the Werewolves of the West series by Carol Van Atta. I know this series is called Werewolves of the West, but there are so many other supernatural critters involved, it's craziness. Along with the Werewolves, we have Vampires, Fae, Witches, Angels, Fallen Angels... I think there was even mention of a Werelion? It was a supernatural smorgasbord, and had the action, suspense, and romance to match.

The story is told from both Chloe and Melanie's point of view. I enjoyed each perspective equally. Alucin is amazing! I'll leave it at that. Melanie was a fun addition. She's pretty much a supernatural man magnet. We are introduced to many new characters, both good and bad, and it's hard to know who to trust. Some of them want something from Chloe and some want something from Melanie. There were twists and turns, and I liked the surprises. The romantic anticipation is intoxicating, and this book is full of it.

She Kissed a Vampire by Carol Van Atta was kindly provided to me by the Bewitching Book Tours for review. The opinions are my own.

Back in my motel room, I paced like one of the caged cats down at the Wildlife Park. I was eager for some action, Kellen action, and I understood that my crushing desire wasn’t normal. Ordinary attractions didn’t cause a person to forget all else, even to the point of not worrying about a best friend on the brink of complete ruin.

Typical romances didn’t lead to amnesia either. Not that I didn’t remember there was a supernatural world raging around me, but I just didn’t care. Knowing the truth seemed like something I’d always been aware of, not a day-old revelation. In fact, nothing about this attraction to the fae prince was normal.

As the time for our rendezvous drew closer, I could feel him in my mind, caressing my thoughts with an inhuman energy that sent jolts of erotic pleasure through me like an electrical current pulsing through a wire. I was somehow in tune to his presence; the feeling grew stronger as the minutes ticked by. It was as if he was signaling me, preparing me for his arrival. And like any good subject awaiting royalty, I was prepared to roll out the red carpet of my life for him to stroll down, and maybe, if I wasn’t careful, he’d stomp and wipe his muddy boots on it instead.

A teensy part of me warned how dangerous this magnificent male was to my health, and not just my heart health, but my overall wellbeing. His power unleashed would destroy me. Yet I was willing to risk everything to feel his hands on me.

I’d never been boy crazy growing up, or focused on sex as an adult. I’d been with one man, my former jerk of a husband. Our love life had been more than satisfying in the beginning, but as things went bad, so did our time in the bedroom. We stopped sharing a bed altogether, which only served to increase my insecurity. After all, he was finding fulfillment elsewhere. Fulfillment, he made clear in a multitude of ways, I could no longer provide. But now, with Kellen’s attention, I felt like a shy school girl who’d landed the big guy on campus’ attention, times a thousand. I was giddy with feelings and sensations I’d only written about in books, never once believing they could become a reality, especially for someone like me—plain old me.

The sudden sense of a door opening in my mind shocked my thoughts into submission.

You are beautiful, precious, worthy of love. There is no need for you to hide behind your human cosmetics, for your natural shine is what makes my heart beat for you, Melanie Larson.

I gasped as Kellen’s words found a home in my mind, soothing my fears, calming my anxious thoughts. How could I have doubted his intentions for even a moment? I was trying to sabotage an experience that would surely exceed any expectations.

Armed with renewed confidence, I silenced my inner critic and determined that I would enjoy the night, putting all notions of future love and long term relationships aside.

This was my one night to be brazen, brave, and to feel beyond beautiful. I intended to embrace every moment. Tomorrow would come soon enough with its harsh realities.

 It always did.

Blurred Lines … when faeries bite!

I don’t know about you, but I grew up with Tinkerbell and other frilly fairies that waved their wands and made magic …good magic. Fairy Godmother turned Cinderella’s plain dress into a gorgeous gown worthy of a stroll down the red carpet on Oscar night. She took a pumpkin made for carving into a carriage fit for royalty. See what I mean? Good magic. But in today’s paranormal fantasy/urban fantasy adventures, there is a whole new breed of fairies, or as they’re sometimes called, Fey, Faery, Fae, … who have their own brand of magic, and it’s not necessarily the ‘good’ kind.

In my Werewolves of the West series, not only do I feature vampires, werewolves, mutants, witches and warlocks, but also faeries (shifters, angels and demons, too). These faeries come from either one of two Fae courts: The Dark or Unseelie Court or The Light or Seelie Court. And I promise you, the line between light and dark is often blurred far more than Robin Thicke’s line between twerking and flirting. (Sorry, just couldn’t help myself!) Let me put it another way, this summer’s hit song didn’t invent the concept of blurred lines.

Somewhere between pleasure and pain, love and hate, dark and light, you just might find a shadowy, not so definitive line. One that’s blurred and easily crossed. The Fae, in my books, live in the shadows.

Even the so-called light faeries are at times indistinguishable from their Dark Court brethren, making the character motives hard to pin down. You never know what mischief a faery might make in your life.

Unfortunately for Melanie Larson, the faeries that cross her path end up crossing her in some big, bad, bone-chilling ways.

Take a sneak-peek into a scene from Melanie’s point of view in Book Two, She Kissed a Vampire:

“Ready to travel Ava Airlines?” the faery joked for my benefit before addressing David. “We should be able to cross over without a portal. Your abilities are as strong as most full-blooded faeries.”

I didn’t bother asking about portals. My curiosity had taken a backseat to the sense of doom now plaguing me. My breath caught in my chest and self-doubt bled through my thoughts like an erupted vein causing my head to throb every time my heart thudded. I wanted to scream at Ava. Flying to Faery was not what I wanted, not now, not ever. Alcuin, please come back. I’m so sorry. We’ll work things out. I sent the mental message as a last ditch effort to stop the inevitable.

It was too late.

Propelled through the darkness, my screams were silenced by a crushing pressure that wrapped around my throat like a noose. Unlike the times before, the journey stretched on and on, twisting and turning me in a vortex of swirling mists and shadowy figures. At some point I lost consciousness.

Awareness was brought on by an annoying and somewhat painful series of jabs down the length my body. I cracked my eyes open just enough to glimpse the source.

I yelped and scrambled to my feet, brushing off the winged creatures. Like insects, some fought to maintain their perches while others scattered into the air around me, not venturing too far. One chattered its disapproval as it hovered an inch from my nose. Its wings buzzed and it waved a tiny fisted hand, reminding me of an evil Tinker Bell. I could only assume I’d been ambushed by a mob of angry pixies.

“I mean you no harm,” I stuttered while backing away.

They tittered, the sound reminding me of maniacal laughter on a tiny scale. Unsettling, the noise sent me over the edge of my personal tolerance for all things creepy and downright bizarre. Surrounded by the flying fiends, terror clutched my midsection, sending my tummy into turmoil. I heaved, spewing the coffee I’d downed with such fervor all over the faery raging in my face. The liquid knocked it sideways. It tumbled away until one of its friends stopped it midair. They both raised their fists, their eyes shooting daggers.

I realized then that except for the now retaliating pixies, poking at me and pulling my hair, I was alone.

Even worse, I had no clue if I’d landed in the Dark Court or the Light Court.

When one of my miniature attackers bared its fangs and dove for my neck, I decided it was the former. I was lost in the dark fae’s realm with no way out and no one to help me.

(Skipping over Chloe’s scene…and, back to Melanie whose predicament has only gotten worse.)

My screams barely registered as I swung wildly with waning strength. I battled to stay on my feet. Once I hit the ground it would be over. The puny mouthed pixies, with their ice-pick-sharp teeth, would finish the job they’d started. I was already scratched and bleeding from the top of my head to my ankles. At this rate I couldn’t take much more abuse. Making my defense more impossible were the tears clouding my ability to gauge the enemies’ movements as they darted in to break not only my body, but also my spirit with their brutal brand of warfare.

I’d managed to snap a few in half and at least two more were missing limbs, but even with those small victories I was losing ground. Their movements had become more coordinated where mine had become sluggish and sporadic. I suspected their bites did more than damage my skin. My increasing grogginess was proof enough of that observation. I guessed some type of fast-acting venom was the cause. Clearly in this case, size didn’t matter. The old “the bigger they are the harder they fall” adage was reaching mantra status in my mind.

I needed to get a grip, and fast. This was no time to ponder my predicament. I was fighting to stay alive … wasn’t I? A voice in my head hinted otherwise, suggesting I take a rest. Surely I deserved a nap. I’d defended myself valiantly. If I surrendered, the little beasts would go back to whatever faery hole they’d crawled from and leave me alone. Wouldn’t they?

“Get away from her! Shoo! Be gone! All of you!” a faraway voice commanded, before I drifted into to darkness.

If you’d like to see what happens to Melanie and her faery ‘friends’ you will want to continue with her adventure in She Kissed a Vampire. Oh, she does kiss a vampire as well. You might want to start with I Kissed a Dog and see how things became so blurred to begin with.

Did you read all the way down to this sentence? Yay! That means you reached the part where I thank you for taking time out of your sure-to-be busy schedule to learn more about me and my crazy assortment of characters. Thank you! Hope I made you smile and that you enter my Giveaway, and befriend me on Goodreads and Facebook. I love comments and hope to hear from you.

Like most authors, Carol Van Atta is no stranger to the written word. She penned a short novel at age 12 (somewhat frightening illustrations included) and had a creative writing piece published in her high school newspaper.

Devouring books from numerous genres, she developed a deep thirst for more reading materials, and could almost always be found with her nose in a book.

CAROL has contributed to several popular anthologies and devotional books, her first novel, Slaying the Shadows, a spiritual thriller, was selected as one of Christian Women Today’s Top Summer Reads 2005.

She lives in the rainy wetlands of Oregon with her terrifying teens and a small zoo of animals. She is taking an undetermined hiatus away from inspirational writing to delve into her darker side. It’s been rumored this genre-jumping occurred after Carol discovered two suspicious red marks on her neck.

As a result of this genre-jumping, she has completed, and is awaiting publication for I Kissed a Dog, Book One in the Werewolves of the West Series.

In summary: Carol is a cross genre author with a wide ranging style for a wide range of readers.

Book Review: Finale by Becca Fitzpatrick

Finale (Hush, Hush #4) by Becca Fitzpatrick
Genre: Young Adult (Paranormal/Fantasy Romance)
Date Published: October 23, 2012
Publisher: Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers

Will love conquer all?

Nora and Patch thought their troubles were behind them. Hank is gone and they should be able to put his ugly vendetta to rest. But in Hank's absence, Nora has become the unwitting head of the Nephilim and must finish what Hank began. Which ultimately means destroying the fallen angels - destroying Patch.

Nora will never let that happen, so she and Patch make a plan: lead everyone to believe they have broken up, and work the system from the inside. Nora will convince the Nephilim that they are making a mistake in fighting the fallen angels, and Patch will find out everything he can from the opposing side. They will end this war before it can even begin.

But the best-laid plans often go awry. Nora is put through the paces in her new role and finds herself drawn to an addictive power she never anticipated.

As the battle lines are drawn, Nora and Patch must confront the differences that have always been between them and either choose to ignore them or let them destroy the love they have always fought for.

Finale is the fourth and final book in the Hush, Hush Saga by Becca Fitzpatrick. This one had some twists and surprises, that's for sure. Some I saw coming, but not all. Nora is figuring her way as the new Nephilim leader. I think she handles things quite well considering. And Patch?

“You dress to impress," I said approvingly.
"No, Angel." He leaned in, his teeth softly grazing my ear. "I undress to impress.”

Need I say more?

I enjoyed some of the supporting characters more in this book too. For example, Vee never fully grew on me until this book. Now, I can't see the series without her. This one had some twists and surprises, that's for sure. Some I saw coming, but not all. Finale was full of drama complete with giggles and tears. I'm sad to see the ending to this saga, but I'm very happy with the resolutions. We got our questions answered, and everything was tied up nicely.

“Did you know, the first time I saw you, I thought: I’ve never seen anything more captivating and beautiful?”

“Why are you telling me this?” I said miserably.

“I saw you, and I wanted to be close to you. I wanted you to let me in. I wanted to know you in a way no one else did. I wanted you, all of you. That wanting nearly drove me mad.” Patch paused, inhaling softly, as though breathing me in. “And now that I have you, the only thing that terrifies me is having to go back to that place. Having to want you all over again, with no hope of my desire ever being fulfilled. You’re mine, Angel. Every last piece of you. I won’t let anything change that.”

  Character Interview:
Arriving early to a penthouse suite Inferno Hotel in Acheron for today’s interview, I’m surprised to find both Draven and Sebastian are waiting. It’s more surprising to find them both relaxed and engaged in civil conversation.

Draven stands from the red velvet couch, wearing casual jeans and a fitted white shirt. His sleeves are rolled up over taut forearms. With his designer clothes, dark hair and movie star smile, he looks right at home in the opulent surroundings.

“Hello. I’m so glad you made it here safe and sound. I’m Draven and this is Sebastian.”  He gestures to the man behind him and immediately moves to one of the Queen Anne chairs and pulls it nearer to the table for me where afternoon tea is set out complete with miniature sandwiches and scrumptious cakes on a silver stand.

“Jenna Asher, Acheron Globe Weekender.” I don’t offer to shake his hand since I’m aware Draven doesn’t like to be touched. Sebastian nods in acknowledgement and throws his arm over the backrest of the couch.

“I’m glad to be here.” I blush despite myself and reach into my bag to grab my recorder, hoping the color will fade fast.

Apart from disarming good looks, these two couldn’t be more opposite if they tried.

Sebastian’s clothes appeared worn, his blond hair ruffled and in need of a trim, giving him a fresh from a California beach look. Easy confidence rolled off him.

“How about we let Draven play mom and pour the tea while we get started on your questions,” Sebastian smirks, scratching a glass-cut jawline.

Draven rolls his eyes and goes about serving us. I clear my throat and refer to my notes to avoid direct eye contact with Sebastian. It feels strangely like the man can peer into my soul.

“There’s been a lot of speculation on the gossip sites about the relationship between you two.

Nobody seems to know much about you, Sebastian. How did it happen that a man with no past to speak of is holding secret meetings with one of the most powerful men in the city?”

Sebastian barks a laugh. “Appearances can be deceptive.”

Draven shoots him a warning glare and I already get a sense I won’t hear many answers.

“What Sebastian means,” Draven tells me as he places a delicate white china cup in front of me, “is he’s not at all mysterious. Our relationship is merely that our families go back a long way. Sebastian is helping me with an on-going project.”

Sebastian is watching him talk, his lips pressed taut. He clearly wants to say more.

“Oh.” My journalist spidey senses tingle. I sense a scoop. “Is this a project we’ll be hearing about soon?”

Draven’s face is a perfect mask of calm, too calm. He’s hiding something. “I certainly hope not.”

“What about the sudden upsurge of violent crime in the city. Are you concerned your project may be affected?”

Sebastian scoots forward on the couch and lifts his hand to indicate he’s got this one. “While this “Project”,” he makes air quotes and smiles in a way I’m sure in meant as a distraction, “is ongoing, security in the city is a premium concern. We’ve both brought in extra guards to help the authorities.”

“You mean mercenaries?” I ask, confused but positive this is a scoop. They’ve been protecting the city with their own people.

Sebastian suddenly commits his expression to the same blank mask Draven wore a moment ago. “I mean individuals who are exceptionally experienced in protection. It’s not something we are free to discuss further.”

Cut off again, I refer to my notes and change direction. “Given that there will be photographs accompanying the article, I’m sure our female readers would love to know if there is a special lady in either of your lives?”

“Yes,” the young men say in unison.

Tension cuts through the air all of a sudden and my china cup rattles on the saucer as I attempt to lift it. I seem to have crossed into unwelcome questions again. Neither will look at the other.

“Care to elaborate?” I chance the question hoping for a reply against all odds.

“I’m seeing someone,” Draven answers somewhat smugly. “But I prefer to keep my private life private.” His eyes finally settle on Sebastian and an eyebrow arches.

Sebastian releases a lungful of air and smiles like the cat that got the cream. He sits back and settles his ankle across his knee. “There is someone I’m spending a lot of time with. I think you could say we’re closer than friends.”

Draven’s eyes narrow almost imperceptivity and his careful mask drops for an instant. I’m about to ask if Sebastian would like to offer the lucky girl’s name when Draven stands.

“I apologize, Ms. Asher, I’ve just remembered I have something I need to attend to.”

“Oh, yes.” I haven’t made it half way through my questions. I stand anyway, sure the interview is over.

“Please feel free to make use of the hotel. Stay and have lunch if you wish. On me of course.”

“That’s very kind,” I reply but Draven is already out the door.

Sebastian grabs a handful of tiny cakes and smiles. “That was interesting. Nice to meet you.”

Then he’s gone too and I’m left alone and wondering if it was something I said.

The Blurb:
Candra Ember used to dream of saving the world one person at a time. She never expected to become an angelic weapon and the last hope in the battle against ultimate darkness.

Falling for a Nephilim wasn’t part of Sebastian’s plan. Distraction is something he can’t afford when his rival, Draven, wants what Sebastian has.

Lies, manipulation, and corruption are twisting the lives of the citizens in Acheron. The Arch is missing from Heaven, and a demon is intent on claiming the city. At a time they should be growing closer, grief and paranoia is driving Candra and Sebastian apart.

If the price of restoring the Watchers to Heaven is a human soul, who deserves to be saved?

About the Author:
Carol Oates has never been one to remain still for long. After her mother’s mad dash to the hospital through the empty city streets of Dublin, Ireland, Carol made her debut into the world in the early hours of Christmas morning. Since then her pace has not slowed down in the least.

Carol was introduced to the world of supernatural books when, as a child, her family moved to a coastal suburb of north Dublin known as Clontarf; famous as the birthplace of Bram Stoker, the prolific author responsible for breathing life into the legendary story of “Dracula.” This stirred in Carol an early passion for reading about all things supernatural. When that passion was combined with a deep interest in the history and folklore of Ireland, as well as an active and vivid imagination, Carol Oates, the author, was born. Carol’s love of writing about anything not entirely “human" emerged.
