Book Review: Clockwork Princess by Cassandra Clare

Clockwork Princess (The Infernal Devices #3) by Cassandra Clare
Genre: Young Adult (Paranormal/Fantasy Romance)
Date Published: March 19, 2013
Publisher: Walker Books Ltd

Danger and betrayal, secrets and enchantment in the breathtaking conclusion to the Infernal Devices trilogy.

Tessa Gray should be happy – aren't all brides happy? Yet as she prepares for her wedding, a net of shadows begins to tighten around the Shaodwhunters of the London Institute.

A new demon appears, one linked by blood and secrecy to Mortmain, the man who plans to use his army of pitiless automatons, the Infernal Devices, to destroy the Shadowhunters. Mortmain needs only one last item to complete his plan. He needs Tessa. And Jem and Will, the boys who lay equal claim to Tessa's heart, will do anything to save her.

Clockwork Princess is the third book in The Infernal Devices Trilogy by Cassandra Clare. Each book in this series got progressively better and better. This book was amazing! Seriously amazing! This trilogy was well on its way to being my new favorite series after finishing Clockwork Prince, but now The Infernal Devices is officially my new favorite. After having the same favorite for five years, I never expected to say that, but it's true. There are many subplots that branch out from the main plot. All are engaging, and add to the main plot which is both heart wrenching and gut wrenching. We are given different view points from many of the characters. Each character has a story. Each story plays into the bigger picture. This was some of the best character and world building I've ever found in a book. The series as a whole builds this world and the people in it so completely that it becomes real for the reader.

Clockwork Princess far exceeded any expectations I had prior to reading it. With this being the final book in the series, there is very little I can say in regards to any details without giving away some spoilers. There is so much within the details, I thought it'd be impossible to wrap everything up in just one more book, but the author did it flawlessly. If you've read The Mortal Instruments Series, you'll get to see the origins of some things, and you'll love how other things from that series are explained and/or alluded too. It really brings the two series together in a way. Everything that made you fall in love with Jem and Will in the previous two books is that much more powerful and endearing with this last book. I loved seeing a whole new side to Will, and he still maintained the snarky-ness and humor that first attracted me to him. I fell in love with Jem too. There really aren't words to adequately do him justice. My heart broke again and again for both Will and Jem. I don't think I've ever cried so much while reading a book. The epilogue? It almost did me in. Holy cow!

Cassandra Clare's exquisite writing completely immersed me into this world. I literally needed recovery time after I finished reading. It was that good. Even now, twenty-four hours later, I still have to fight back tears when I think about it. A book has never had that effect on me. Ever. Not like this one did. This book has stayed with me, and it will be with me for quite some time. Don't let my crying deter you from reading this book. I normally hate when a book makes me cry, but this story was phenomenal and worth every tear. Clockwork Princess is tragic, bittersweet, and beautiful.

Jem drew the bow back and let the arrow fly; it struck the creature in the side. The massive demon worm writhed in agony, undulating as it swept its great, blind head from side to side, uprooting shrubbery with its thrashings. Leaves filled the air and the boys choked on dust, Gideon backing up with his seraph blade in his hand, trying to see by its light.

“It’s coming toward us,” he said in a low voice.

And indeed it was, the arrow still protruding from its wet, grayish skin, humping its body along with incredible speed. A flick of its tail caught the edge of a statue, sending it flying into the dry ornamental pool, where it shattered into dust.

“By the Angel, it just crushed Sophocles,” noted Will. “Has no one respect for the classics these days?”

Book Review: Clockwork Prince by Cassandra Clare

Clockwork Prince (The Infernal Devices #2) by Cassandra Clare
Genre: Young Adult (Paranormal/Fantasy Romance)
Date Published: December 6, 2011
Publisher: Simon & Schuster, Margaret K. McElderry

In magical Victorian London, orphan Tessa found safety with the Shadowhunters, until traitors betray her to the Magister. He wants to marry her, but so do self-destructive Will and fiercely devoted Jem. Mage Magnus Bane returns to help them. Secrets to her parentage lie with the mist-shrouded Yorkshire Institute's aged manager Alyosius Starkweather.

Clockwork Prince is the second book in The Infernal Devices series by Cassandra Clare. I can't believe it has taken so long to finally read this book. It was even better than Clockwork Angel, and that's saying something because I enjoyed book one quite a bit. This book pulls at your emotions a little more. A lot more actually, and I think it's only going to get worse. You have Tess and her issues with Nate. The betrayal and level of pain only a sibling could do to a person. My heart was already hurting for Jem and his illness, but now it's aching for him, and he wouldn't even know why yet(if ever). I can't say why as it'd give away a spoiler. Now for Will...You find out so much more about him and why he is how he is. My heart broke for him, and it kept breaking again and again. Each time it hurt more and more. It almost brought me to tears. I knew there was more to Will, but I didn't expect to feel this level of emotion for him. I think he has passed up Jace as my favorite male fictional character. I never thought I'd say that.

Emotional stuff aside, there is a lot going on. Charlotte is fighting to keep control of the institute. The Magister is pulling strings behind the scenes which causes some nice twists. Tess is training to fight, and she's good at it. Magnus Bane is still a teddy bear. He likes to play distant and detached, but I think he always was a teddy bear. He's like the wise old owl. We get to meet some new characters along the way too. I wonder about Bridget too. Aside from her odd singing, she's quiet. Is she an automaton? Human? Other? Hmmm.

I was very impressed with this book. It's been a while since a book has brought out such a variety of emotions from me, but Clockwork Prince is definitely a reading experience not to be missed.
“You haven't broken his heart yet, have you?"
"No," Tessa said. Just torn my own in two. "I haven't broken his heart at all.”

Book Review: Clockwork Angel by Cassandra Clare

Clockwork Angel (The Infernal Devices #1) by Cassandra Clare
Genre: Young Adult (Paranormal/Fantasy Romance)
Date Published: August 31, 2010
Publisher: Simon & Schuster, Margaret K. McElderry

In a time when Shadowhunters are barely winning the fight against the forces of darkness, one battle will change the course of history forever. Welcome to the Infernal Devices trilogy, a stunning and dangerous prequel to the New York Times bestselling Mortal Instruments series.

The year is 1878. Tessa Gray descends into London’s dark supernatural underworld in search of her missing brother. She soon discovers that her only allies are the demon-slaying Shadowhunters—including Will and Jem, the mysterious boys she is attracted to. Soon they find themselves up against the Pandemonium Club, a secret organization of vampires, demons, warlocks, and humans. Equipped with a magical army of unstoppable clockwork creatures, the Club is out to rule the British Empire, and only Tessa and her allies can stop them....

Clockwork Angel is the first book in The Infernal Devices series by Cassandra Clare. I actually read this book when it first came out, but that was before my reviewing days began. I knew I loved it, but I wanted to re-read it so I could give it a proper review. Clockwork Angel takes place in London long before most of the characters from The Mortal Instruments series are even alive. However, some of the characters are around already. So, I found some familiar faces. I love the characters in Cassandra Clares books. These are characters I want to badly to be real. Tessa is a wonderful female lead. She's smart, strong, independent, and as it is stated in the book, she handles Will quite well. Will is a character full of layers. We are only shown a few of those layers within this book, but I know he's hiding much more. He is full of snark and sarcasm. So, needless to say he is my favorite. His fascination with demon pox is pretty funny. He uses this sense of humor to hide the more important things, and never lets anyone truly know him. Jem is an absolute sweetheart. I just want to hug him all the time. I don't really see him as a love interest for Tessa, but things are hinting at a love triangle of sorts. There are twists and turns within this story. Some you will see coming. Others? Not so much. What I love about this book, is there is rarely a dull moment. It was so hard to put down, because something is always happening or about to happen. I was glued to Clockwork Angel. It became a new appendage for a few days. I am immediately starting the next book in the series after I finish this review, because I can't wait to see what happens next!

Will went back to scrubbing dried vampire blood off his hands and arms. The task was absorbing enough that he was able to almost completely ignore Gabriel Lightwood when the other boy appeared out of the shadows and sauntered over to Will, a superior smile plastered on his face.

"Nice work in there, Herondale, setting the place on fire," Gabriel observed. "Good thing we were there to clean up after you, or the whole plan would have gone down in flames, along with the shreds of your reputation."

"Are you implying that shreds of my reputation remain intact?" Will demanded with mock horror. "Clearly I have been doing something wrong. Or not doing something wrong, as the case may be." He banged on the side of the carriage. "Thomas! We must away at once to the nearest brothel! I seek scandal and low companionship."

Thomas snorted and muttered something that sounded like "bosh," which Will ignored.

Gabriel’s face darkened. "Is there anything that isn’t a joke to you?"

"Nothing that comes to mind."

"You know," Gabriel said, "there was a time I thought we could be friends, Will."

"There was a time I thought I was a ferret," Will said, "but that turned out to be the opium haze. Did you know it had that effect? Because I didn’t."
