From the New York Times bestselling author of The Only Good Indians comes a tale of the American West, writ in blood.
This chilling historical novel is set in the nascent days of the state of Montana, following a Blackfeet Indian named Good Stab as he haunts the fields of the Blackfeet Nation looking for justice.
It begins when a diary written in 1912 by a Lutheran pastor is discovered within a wall in 2012. What is unveiled is a slow massacre, a nearly forgotten chain of events that goes back to 217 Blackfeet dead in the snow, told in the transcribed interviews with Good Stab, who shares the narrative of his peculiar and unnaturally long life over a series of confessional visits.
This is an American Indian revenge story, captured in the vivid voices of the time, by one of the new masters of literary horror, Stephen Graham Jones.

The Buffalo Hunter Hunter by Stephen Graham Jones is a stand alone story with a very unique spin on vampires. I've never seen vampires portrayed this way, and I have to say... I like it. The premise was interesting and tragic. You have an already horrific event that happened to Native Americans in real life, plus the added horror of this supernatural monster. It was pretty genius really. Where I had issues was with the execution of the storytelling. There are so many different terms, and I couldn't always tell if he was talking about a person or an animal, because the names could go either way. Most of the time, he did a pretty good job of using context clues to tell you who was what, but not always. It took me out of the story at times, and that was distracting. I also wonder about the title. Only because it seemed like everyone hunted Buffalo in the story, including the "Buffalo Hunter Hunter". He also hunted his own people as well as white folks. I mean, he was conflicted when he killed Native Americans, but he did it quite regularly. So, not that conflicted. Anyway, maybe that's why it's titled that way? Everyone hunts Buffalo. He hunts everyone. Am I overthinking this? I don't know. The revenge plot was there too, but sometimes it was an afterthought. Which is not a bad thing in this case, it shows the difficulties 'living' with the monster inside him. That certainly complicated things for him. Ultimately, I'm on the fence about this one. I'm not completely sold. I would love to see more vampires like this though! And, I'd loove to see this as a movie!
