Release Day Review! Dangerously Dark by C.J. Burright, Plus an Interview w/ the Author!

Dangerously Dark (The Dreamcaster Series #3) by C.J. Burright
Genre: Adult Fiction (Paranormal Romance)
Date Published: November 13, 2017
Publisher: Ravenrock Publishing LLC

Some call him Purgatory’s Missing Prince. Demon Master. Overlord of Shadows. Only one woman may call him hers.

A master of dreams, a failure at life…

After another botched career attempt, Quinn Carmichael escapes to a remote lodge for a weekend recharge, needing respite…especially from the nightmares that haunt even her days. When a wounded, sexy-as-sin stranger faceplants unconscious on her kitchen floor, there’s something disturbingly familiar about him—as in he’s the boy from her childhood dreams. Mr. Dark, Dangerous, and Diabolical may be the key to unlocking the mysteries of her past and future, and Quinn isn’t about to let the opportunity—or him—escape without a fight.

His time is running out…

Known as Purgatory’s Missing Prince, Zaire’s existence has been one of endless pain, torture, and loss. Resigned to his fate, his final goal is simple—rescue his nephew before succumbing to the deadly darkness inside him. But when a fateful misstep brings him face-to-face with the one woman who could have saved him once upon a dream—the one woman he treasures above all else—he battles to keep his distance before he destroys her, too. But he would gladly sell his soul for just one taste.

Love draws them together, destiny will tear them apart

With ruthless enemies closing in, Quinn and Zaire must fight to save each other and those they care for before it’s too late—even if it means they’re doomed to live apart forever.

Dangerously Dark is the third book in the Dreamcaster series by C.J. Burright. This series just gets better and better. This time we see things mostly from the perspectives of Zaire and Quinn, though we do get glimpses from other characters from time to time. These different views really helped to build the situation and what was going on. Zaire has had a horrific life. Granted he has also done a lot of horrific things. Quinn was unique. She has used her dreams to strengthen herself it seems. She is a survivor. So, when Zaire disappeared from her dreams, she learned to fight them herself.  I loved her strength. I also love when they showed their vulnerabilities too. Characters like these are what makes fiction believable. I love it. The romantic tension is palpable. You don't know if they're going to rip each other's throats out or rip each other's clothes off. Add in the horror and mystery that always surrounds the world of the V’alkara, and this is completely impossible to stop reading. The whole Dreamcaster Series story line is pretty ingenious. Each book blows me away. I can't get enough.

The ARC of Dangerously Dark by C.J. Burright was kindly provided to me by the author & Bewitching Book Tours for review. The opinions are my own.

Quinn tossed the note on the coffee table and wrapped one hand around the warm ceramic mug, absently petting Wolfgang with the other. Dusk took over beyond the wall of windows, made darker by the blizzard. Falling snow hid the skirting tree line. Wind howled at the house corners and turned treetops into jerking puppets. The perfect meltdown location. No phones, no people, no problem.
The lamp flickered and died, leaving her with only the dancing firelight, not that she minded. The power had lasted longer than she expected. Stoked fire, hot cider, and now she had a great excuse to procrastinate reading unhelpful flyers. She sipped her drink and wriggled back on the couch.

Wolfgang launched off her lap, kicking papers everywhere and sloshing her drink.

“Bad cat!”

He scurried into the kitchen, out of sight. A distinct thud followed, which meant Wolfgang was up to no good.

“I should’ve sent you off to the Nameless One.” Quinn shoved the remaining flyers aside and nabbed the flashlight from the end table. “You’d make an amazing hat, and there’d be enough fur left to make a stole, the perfect ensemble to compliment her plastic face.”

She flicked on the flashlight and shuffled into the kitchen, ignoring how the light made all the shadows twist and scuttle on the walls and ceiling. Broken bones might bother her, but the dark never had.

Wolfgang expectantly stood at the back door. He meowed, high and plaintive. Nothing looked out of place. Whatever had made the thud wasn’t in the kitchen. Maybe the wind had blown a loose branch against the house.

“What, you’re a snow leopard now? There’s no fancy feline feast waiting out there for you.”

Wolfgang rubbed his cheek against the doorframe, circled, and meowed again.

Thud. The entire door shook.

Quinn jumped. That was no branch. All the horror movies she loved to watch and ridicule flashed to mind, a lot less funny now. Alone in the woods. Killer storm. No electricity. No connection to the outside world.

Wolfgang’s purr rumbled, and he slid his face over the jamb again. The noise hadn’t spooked him even a little, and animals always sensed evil. Wolfgang had had no problem detecting it in Molly.

She squared her shoulders. No one would be roaming around in a blizzard. An animal had probably knocked the trashcan into the door, and a quick look would ease any worry. At the first glimpse of fur or fang—or red, glowing eyes—she’d go for the door slam.

Pushing Wolfgang back with one foot, she cracked open the door.

Wind exploded in, ripping the doorknob from her grip and firing snow and ice into her eyes. The door banged into the wall, and the storm’s full force rushed inside. Quinn scrambled for the knob and stopped, frozen by more than the sudden blast of cold.

A man filled the entryway from threshold to frame, dark as the nightfall behind him. Steam drifted from his bare head. Frost coated his short, sable hair, and even in the flashlight beam, his complexion held an unhealthy blue-gray hue. One hand was anchored to the doorpost in a white-knuckled grip. The other brandished a wicked as sin knife.

She shone the light on his face, and her stomach roller-coastered. Her demon. The one who’d haunted her nightmares years ago and then abruptly bailed, never to return. No matter what face he wore, his death-black, abysmal eyes were unforgettable.

Or were her delusions returning with a vengeance?

“Get out of my way.” His chest heaved, and he lurched forward, the knife pointed at her. His guttural words erased any suspicion that he might be another hallucination. He was too present, too solid to be anything but real.

Merde. He was real.

How long have you been writing?
Growing up in the boonies, I had to find ways to entertain myself after I’d read all the books on hand, so I turned to writing my own stories when I was in my teens. I wouldn’t call them good stories and they are best kept in a shoebox in the deepest, darkest recesses of the attic. Those early scratchings should probably be burned to avoid becoming blackmail material.

What inspired you to write The Dreamcaster Series?
A dream started the whole thing. Appropriate, huh? 😊 I dreamed of Kalila from Wonderfully Wicked, standing in a café with Lydon standing menacingly behind her, and I had to know why he was stalking her. Then I started plotting, and as more characters come out of the shadows, I find I must write their stories too.

Did you always plan for it to be a series?
Once I started writing Wonderfully Wicked, I knew there was too much in this supernatural world of dreams and nightmares that I wanted to explore to include in a single book. And as I fall in love with the broken characters, I want them all to experience their own HEA. It wouldn’t be fair to leave them all hanging, right?

What was the weirdest thing you had to google while doing research?
I did Google some angelic language, which was both weird and interesting. I thought about using a bit since Zaire knows how to speak in angel/demon tongue, but I didn’t want readers stumbling over how to pronounce words like oxex and gmicalzo. But I’ll definitely name my next cat zvrza.

This series would make some great movies. Would you want to turn your books into movies or TV shows?
Ooh, thanks for saying that! I’d choose a long-running TV show like Supernatural – with awesome (and hot) guys, spooky stuff, action, fun times, and romance. Maybe Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki could find a new acting home. 😊

Which of your characters do you relate to most and why?
They all have a piece of me stitched into them, but I relate most to Kalila from Wonderfully Wicked and Quinn from Dangerously Dark. Kalila is guarded with people she doesn’t know well or trust (like me), but I’m also an idealist like Quinn. And like both of them, I’m not afraid to fight for what’s important to me when necessary. Ka-pow!

What is a secret about you that nobody else knows?
I’d be on Dancing with the Stars if I could partner with Val Chmerkovskiy. And dancing (especially in public) sooooo isn’t my thing.

What book have you read too many times to count?
The Magic Garden by Gene Stratton Porter. It’s antiquated, beautiful and bittersweet, and a rescued treasure from my grandmother’s library. I’m not usually prone to waterworks, but this story gets me. Every time.

What is the best piece of writing advice you ever received?
Keep writing, keep learning your craft, and never give up!

If you could hop into the life of any fictional character, who would it be and why?
Claire from Outlander because…Jamie. He’d be worth giving up a couple hundred years of technology.

What was one of the most surprising things you learned while creating your books?
In researching dreams, it was interesting how some people are so paralyzed by their dreams they can’t move and even have trouble breathing. It’s amazing how the subconscious (or is it some outside force?) can affect the body.

What do you like to do when you're not writing?
I have a day job which takes up an unfortunate amount of my time, but when I’m not writing or working, I’m reading, working out, or playing Assassin’s Creed surrounded by my adoring cats. It’s a superb life.

Are any of the things in your books based on real life experiences or purely all imagination?
My stories are a mixture of both—I think it’s impossible not to color my writing with my own life experiences—and as far as who and/or what are based off truth…I’ll never tell!

Thanks so much for having me! <3
Thank you for hanging out at my blog & answering all my questions!

Release Day Review! A Review of Beautifully Burned by C.J. Burright

Beautifully Burned (The Dreamcaster Series #2) by C.J. Burright
Genre: Adult (Paranormal Romance)
Date Published: August 23, 2016
Publisher: Swoon Romance

Grandma warned me to resist him.

I know what he is. Even if he doesn't sparkle in the sun, hiss at holy water, or go by the traditional name of vampire, I know.

He doesn't want or need my blood. He wants my dreams...more specifically, my nightmares. And I've got oodles of those, so many they leak.

He's emotionally scarred, growly, dangerous, and kindles all my senses. Love isn't on his agenda. Having him for a guardian isn't on my list of fun, either. My touch sends him into darkness.

I shouldn't want him.

I can't want him.

But I do.

If I surrender instead of escape, I'll lose everything--my sister, my will, my life. Gran forgot to tell me the most important detail of all: how am I supposed to resist him when he's everything I've ever dreamed of?

Beautifully Burned is told in a dual, third person POV, and may be read as a standalone.

Beautifully Burned is the second book in the Dreamcaster Series by C.J. Burright. Daxon and Ella are the main characters this time around, but don't worry Lydon and Kalila are still very prominent(and adorable) throughout the book. Dax and Ella are similar, in that they both have overcome or are overcoming pains from their past, not to mention trust issues. I mean, V’alkara tend to hunt Dreamcasters after all. I love Dax. He's tough,  independent, and puts on this uncaring face, but he's kind of got this inner teddy bear to him. I enjoyed seeing it peak out through his alpha self at times.

We get to know new characters and learn more about some old ones. Plus, there are some who are just plain evil.

This is such a unique world, and I like that we're getting different main characters with each book. It keeps things fresh, and gives us different perspectives. This is definitely a favorite series for me!

The ARC of Beautifully Burned was kindly provided to me by the author for review. The opinions are my own.

“Poe,” Daxen said in a somber tone.
“Poe?”
“I prefer Poe, if I’m reading horror. Which I wasn’t.”
The lines around Ella’s eyes softened. “What were you reading?”
He took a sip of his Shirley Temple and lifted one cherry by the stem. The fruit dangled from his fingers, close to his mouth. He flicked out his tongue and caught a drop of liquid just as it fell. “Five Sure Steps to Seduce a Stubborn Woman.”
“Only five steps? Sounds like a scam.” Her breathy voice made him shiver, and he’d swear the room heated a few degrees. Repairing the erratic furnace would be his next project.
Holding her gaze, he slid the cherry into his mouth and chewed, slowly.
A delicate flush rose in her cheeks and she tugged at her collar. As if realizing what she did, she dropped her hand into her lap and her eyes narrowed. “Not my business if you need help in the charm department, but good for you. Way to not give up.”
His lips twitched. She may not be ready to claim him for her V’alkara, but her reaction was promising. Kalila had never looked at him in such a hungry way. “Resist if you wish, dreamcaster. All the more challenging.”
Her green eyes glittered and she pressed her thighs together in an almost imperceptible move. The fluttering pulse at her throat was impossible to miss. He might be on to something with this seduction business.

Spotlight on Wonderfully Wicked by C.J. Burright!!

If you've read my review, you know I LOVE Wonderfully Wicked! Well.... it has a new cover and some new revisions! Take a look. This is a must read!

Wonderfully Wicked (The Dreamcaster Series #1) by C.J. Burright
Genre: Adult (Paranormal Romance)
Date Published: May 13, 2014
Publisher: Swoon Romance

Dreams can be deadly…

She’s an ordinary girl with a nightmare problem

For as long as she can remember, Kalila Montgomery has been tormented by creatures from her nightmares. Doomed to a solitary life with a herd of cats, she’s determined to go down fighting. Until the man of her dreams—literally—kidnaps her and claims to know a cure. If only she believed him…

He’s not your average supernatural hero

Lydon v’al Endrian will stop at nothing to be free of the V’alkara, a dangerous brotherhood who feed on dreams. But the key to his freedom, sassy dreamcaster Kalila, might be his toughest challenge yet. No matter how much she protests, he intends to keep her safe from the V’alkara…even if it requires the ultimate sacrifice.

Their love is forbidden

Now on the run with a man she can’t quite trust or resist, Kalila must decide—fight for her dream of a normal life? Or embrace a power she doesn’t want to save Lydon?

“A suggestion.” His voice dropped, weighed down with intensity. “Continue holding your secrets close, hidden. There are some who would misuse your abilities.”
Her heart slammed on the brakes, and she didn’t bother to hide her sarcastic tone. “Like you?”
“I’ll never hurt you.”
“Liar.” Her eyelids drooped. She needed sleep, but not with Mel near. Anyway, she couldn’t leave them both vulnerable to whatever Lydon might do.
“If you need to rest, go ahead.” A smile entered his voice. “I won’t violate you in any way while you dream.”
She rubbed her grainy eyes and straightened. He was too comfortable, too close. Relaxing was out of the question. “I have a great idea. You sleep and I’ll keep watch. When Mel wakes up, I’ll take my turn.”
Without warning, Lydon brushed one long finger along her cheek.
A delicious surge of pleasure coasted down her spine.
“I don’t sleep, Kalila.” His breath trekked over the cheek he’d just touched, exciting all her senses. His mouth hovered a terrifying inch or so from hers.
“Ever?” Her voice trembled in the air between them, skeptical, hopeful.
“Never.” His eyes twinkled with amusement and something else, something hungry, while his attention fixed on her lips.
Yet, she couldn’t move. As she’d aged, her nightmares grew stronger, physically affecting anyone who slept close while she snoozed. So she’d bought a house with some property, enough to provide a barrier between her dreams and sleeping neighbors. No slumber parties for her, no hope of nodding off and waking up wrapped in a lover’s embrace. But now …
The night twirled around her, dizzying, and that yearning to be free of loneliness awakened again. A man who didn’t sleep. A man who couldn’t be harmed by the tentacles of her nightmares. A man who sent her senses into overdrive.
A man who killed her in a night vision.

Review of Wonderfully Wicked by C.J. Burright + Author Guest Post!

Wonderfully Wicked (The Dreamcaster Series #1) by C.J. Burright
Genre: Adult (Paranormal Romance)
Date Published: May 13, 2014
Publisher: Swoon Romance

A dreamcaster with the ability to channel creatures from her nightmares, headstrong and cynical Kalila Montgomery longs for a peaceful, picket-fence life… until the man literally of her dreams kidnaps her.

Survival quickly becomes her number one goal, yet a growing attraction to the man in her nightmares is impossible to ignore. While she fears he will kill her, other, more terrifying enemies surround her, and Kalila succumbs to his scheme to escape. She may be his one hope for freedom…

A deadly combination of power, cunning, and cold-hearted charm, Lydon v'al Endrian fears nothing. Feels nothing. Chained to a brotherhood of men with the supernatural ability to invade dreams, he hunts dreamcasters to be harvested for their dreams and killed. His target: Kalila Montgomery. But Kalila awakens an undeniable dark desire and a longing for a freedom long-lost.

To gain everything he craves, Lydon must seduce Kalila before his plot is discovered… a hopeless challenge which, if failed, will earn him a death-sentence. Caught up in a dangerous world of secrets and obsession, doubt and betrayal, Kalila and Lydon face the nightmare of their lives, where love will either deliver them—or destroy them both.

Wonderfully Wicked is the first book in The Dreamcaster Series by C.J. Burright. This book had me so completely entranced, it was crazy. I loved every bit of it. Dreamcasters are used and ultimately killed by the V'alkara. Lydon and Kalila were snarky and sarcastic. They're bantering was fun and witty. I couldn't get enough. They are both so headstrong and stubborn. Kalila is a strong character anyway. She doesn't take crap from anyone, and that's just what Lydon needs. He needs someone to put him in his place. The more I got to know these two, the more I fell in love with them. I laughed, yelled, and cried while reading this book. I hate books that make me cry, but there's no way I could hate this book. Quite the opposite!

Wonderfully Wicked was dark, and seductive, and very unexpected. I loved it! I think I said that already, but I just had to reiterate that fact. The author couldn't have picked a more perfect name for this book, because Wonderfully Wicked is exactly what it is!

Wonderfully Wicked by C.J. Burright was kindly provided to me by the author for review. The opinions are my own.

I’m so excited to be on What’s Beyond Forks. Woo-hoo! Today, I’m talking about my top ten favorite books. Love this topic!

My parents instilled in me a love for reading, but it’s my dad who really nudged me into the genre of fantasy. He’d go on trips and return with boxed sets of books or buy me books for Christmas. We trade books we like, although that’s slowed down with the ebook explosion. Books have influenced me from a young age, so selecting ten favorites wasn’t easy. But these are the top ten titles I treasure most.

1. LOTR trilogy by J.R.R. Tolkien. Yes, I know this is technically three books, but so are several of my other choices. This is my post and I’ll do what I want.  I grew up in the country, and I’d read LOTR and this yearning for adventure would overcome me. So my friends and I would take off on our horses and spend all day in the woods, chasing goblins and fleeing from imaginary dragons. Ah, the good ol’ days.

2. Chronicles of Prydain by Sir Lloyd Alexander – while this is more than a few books, it covers all of Taran’s story, so I count it as one. I loved how a lowly, orphaned pig-herder matured into a king. It’s a story of hope. And Gurgi! Crunchings and munchings, anyone?

3. Chronicles of Narnia by C. S. Lewis. You don’t know how many times I longed to have a magical wardrobe to hide in and travel to a different world. I’m sure a lot of people have dreamed the same, to escape reality and go someplace where you’re recognized as special. I always hated it when they had to leave Narnia.

4. The Magic Garden by Gene Stratton-Porter. My grandparents lived in Nebraska and had this old, abandoned ranch house. Every time we visited them, we’d make at least one trip out to the ranch. It was on one of these trips that I discovered some old books of my grandmother’s. The Magic Garden was one of them. It is my most cherished book, partly because it was my grandmother’s, and partly because it’s one of those timeless stories you want to read over and over. It makes your heart hurt in so many different ways. It’s a sweet, pure heart-wrenching love story that makes me cry every freakin’ time.

5. Where Dreams Begin by Lisa Kleypas. This is the book that got me hooked on romance, the gift from my BFF that sat on the shelf for years before I read it in a moment of desperation. Zachary Bronson. Sigh. He probably has a lot to do with my anti-hero love too.

6. From This Moment On by Lynn Kurland. Before this book, I had no idea there were stories out there that combined medieval life and romance (my early days of romance discovery, obviously). Add in Ms. Kurland’s sense of humor, and I was hooked. If I could emulate any author, it would be her.

7. The Black Jewels trilogy by Anne Bishop. I love these characters so much. They’re twisted and dark and broken, yet they still cling to hope, which are exactly the type of characters who make me feel. I wanted to see them happy, to overcome evil, to finally find some peace. How could you not love characters named Lucivar, Daemon, and Saetan? And they’re the good guys!

8. The Night Angel trilogy by Brent Weeks. Oh my. Watching Kylar Stern grow up into an assassin just killed me. I wanted to crawl into the pages and hug him so many times! I just love that boy. Despite his hardships and the life he was sucked into, he remained true and honorable. Honorable assassin. Sounds like an oxymoron, I know.

9. Where the Red Fern Grows by Wilson Rawls.  Do I need to explain this one? I’m more of a cat person than a dog lover. Doesn’t matter. I still cry.

10. Xanth series by Piers Anthony. My sister and I shared a room growing up, and we’d have insult contests, inspired by the Xanth books. Pure fantasy, adventure, and a whole lot of fun.

So that’s my list of top ten favorite books. What books make your list?
Check out my review of the following books in this AMAZING series!

author
CJ blames her love for reading and all things Medieval on her father, who plied her often with fantasy novels ranging from Sir Lloyd Alexander to Piers Anthony. Her love for romance, however, lies completely at the feet of her best friend Michelle, who dared to give her a romance novel for her birthday. She smiled, politely said thank you, and tossed it in the corner, where it gathered dust. In a moment of desperation, when only the revolting romance remained in her almost-always toppling stack of awaiting books, she sucked it up and read the romance.
Doomed.

She started writing fantasy and paranormal romance for the cathartic experience, decided she liked it, and after two overlong, horribly written novels joined RWA and the Fantasy, Futuristic & Paranormal special interest chapter. Best classes and critique groups ever. Double doomed.

Now, writing is a necessity, not just a hobby.

In her spare time, when she’s not writing or reading or actually working, CJ might be found in the dojang (4th Dan Black Belt, baby), rooting on the Mariners (who will some day win the World Series), working out (P90X, anyone?), gardening (a little dirt never hurt anyone), or playing Music of the Night on the piano (without mask or cape). She lives in Oregon with her fabulous husband and daughter. Not to mention her minions, a herd of cats.

WONDERFULLY WICKED is CJ's Burright's first novel.

“I took great effort to see you.” His tone hinted the act made him deserving. “You sleep; I’ll keep watch. And my vow of yesterday stands. I won’t molest you.”

To her annoyance, her pulse danced a country jig. Whatever efforts he took on her behalf were of questionable nature, not romantic. She made a rude noise in case he held any such illusions.

“Keep watch for what? No one besides you could reach my window and my door’s bolted.”

Lydon laced his hands behind his head, his lips twitching as though fighting a smile. “Then I’ll watch you. Like before.”

Horror prickled over her in a rushing tide. She leapt up. “You watched me sleep? Not skulked around in my bedroom to attack me?” She groaned, imagining him watching her drool, snore, or grind her teeth.

He laughed, low and warm. “You’re so lovely when you dream, Lils. An angel.” He patted the empty spot beside him.

Her traitorous body, defenseless against him, obeyed. The red, silken comforter hissed beneath her knees while she climbed onto the opposite side of the giant bed. The lone lamp by the bed cast a mystical glow over Lydon, catching golden highlights in his light hair, the silver shards in his eyes. “Watching people sleep is creepy.”

He shrugged. “Not people, just you. Besides, I am creepy.”

Definitely not creepy. Kalila settled into a cross-legged position and fixed him with a no-nonsense look. “Since it seems you have nothing better to do than lie there like a sloth, be useful and fess up. Why am I being treated as some freaking porcelain doll in a glass case? How can my nightmares benefit the V’alkara? Can the V’alkara really take my dreams away? None of you seem sick—and no, mental doesn’t count—so what’s wrong? And when will you take us home?”

Lydon jiggled one black boot. What she thought might be disapproval flickered in his eyes. “I won’t waste our alone time answering inquiries. I have other plans.”

She swallowed hard. Maybe she’d misjudged him. Maybe he was so confident in his assassin abilities—and her helplessness—he felt sneakiness was unnecessary.

He sat up in a blink of an eye, moving with inhuman speed. One large hand was planted next to her knee. His breath fanned her chin. The scent of the outdoors and a tinge of smoke drifted from his clothes. His voice whispered spider-soft.

“Do you care to know what other less attractive names some call me?” The world seemed to shrink to Lydon and the force of his gaze. “Angel of Ruin. Living Nightmare. Scourge.” His eyes gleamed, darkened. “As you might guess from such monikers, peace in my life is rare. I’ll relish any fragments of it I happen to stumble across for as long as possible.”

His fingers trailed her cheek to cup her chin. In the span of a heartbeat, his face changed. From beautiful man to skeletal beast then back to beautiful man. A chill coiled around her soul, deep and cold as a winter storm. Who—what—was this guy?

“Do you feel it too?”

Kalila’s heartbeat rumbled in her ears, kicked at her throat. Her fingers jerked with a fierce need to touch him. Instead, she fisted the blanket. Admit nothing to the enemy. Yet the urge to nestle her cheek into his palm and purr grappled with reason. She had to take control before she did something stupid.
