The Calm After the Storm Blast!

The Calm After the Storm by Mya O'Malley
Genre: Adult (Contemporary Romance)
Date Published: February 23, 2015

Can true love shine through the darkest storm?

The storm of the century raged through the northeast, causing destruction and despair, millions were left without power and hope. Weeks later, countless people were still devastated by the destruction of Hurricane Sandy, Emma Riley among them.

Determined she didn’t need the help of a man, Emma was convinced that she could brave the aftermath of the storm on her own. That is, until Jake came into her life.

After having suffered heartbreak and embarrassment, Jake Mack, a utility foreman, volunteered to travel north from small town, Georgia to assist with the aftermath of the storm. Jake was decidedly done with women. But he didn’t count on meeting Emma or falling in love so quickly. Can he trust this woman or will his past get in the way and ruin the relationship with the one woman he truly loves?

Jake and his crew had now been in the suburbs of New York for a few days. His first thought upon entering this area was his surprise at the devastation. Sure, he had heard about the destruction on the news and had seen footage of the aftermath of Sandy, but it still hadn’t prepared him for the actual sight of Sandy’s rage. Telephone poles were down, trees were snapped in two, and houses were completed destroyed by the storm. Seeing all the destruction only strengthened Jake’s resolve that it had been the right thing to come. He felt proud to be able to help out and be a part of the solution to the horrible aftermath of this disaster.

As the day was wrapping up. Jake and Chris met up with some of their crew in the next town to finish one more area before calling it quits. The chill in the air was something that Jake had prepared for, but was not accustomed to. Clutching the new flannel he had purchased right before his trip, he put it on over his thermal shirt. Thankful for his thermos filled with hot coffee, Jake grabbed it but quickly tossed it aside.

“Come on, Chris! I asked you to stop drinking my coffee. Now there’s none left,” he said as he shook his head, irritated at his friend.

Chris looked up at his boss sheepishly. “Sorry, man. I didn’t sleep well last night. I needed some caffeine.”

“Well, that makes two of us.”

They rode until they approached the utility pole that needed attention. Jake and Chris were among the first to arrive and got busy setting up for the job. Within minutes, the rest of the assigned crew trickled in. The workers were now familiar with the details and routine of this job, so for the most part they worked in silence, focused on getting this last job done so that they could grab some dinner and hit the sheets. It was cold and dark, the night chill settling in upon them. Jake supervised and helped his crew perform their individual duties as quickly as possible. As they were just about wrapping things up, Jake headed over to Steve, one of the older guys directing traffic. He looked frail and tired.

“Hey, Steve. I got this. Why don’t you call it a night, huh? We’ll meet you at the hotel for some dinner.”

“Nah, Jake, we’re almost done here. I’m good,” Steve said as he looked up at Jake with glaring dark circles under his eyes.

“Steve, go. I’m serious. Get in a hot shower and we’ll meet up for dinner. Boss’ orders. Now go and take Andy with you,” Jake gestured toward another man on the crew who looked like he was ready for bed.

Shrugging his shoulders, Steve made his way to one of the smaller utility trucks, calling for his co-worker to join him. Jake took over the responsibility of directing traffic, slowing people down and stopping cars when necessary. Yawning, he waved a small SUV along, noticing that the approaching driver was slowing down, much more than necessary. Jake squinted his eyes to get a better look. The car came to a stop when Jake stepped up to it and its window rolled down. Looking back at Jake was a woman who appeared pretty, even in the diminished light. Wait, scratch that—she was stunning, with long, wavy hair and piercing eyes. His heart faltered just a bit.

“Hi. I wanted to thank you guys for all of the hard work that you’ve been doing. We really appreciate you guys coming up here. I think I speak for everyone,” she said as she smiled widely. Her smile hitched his breath ever so slightly. Jake smiled back. This was certainly a change. Since he had been in this area, some people waved, some people smiled, others remained with their eyes straight ahead, but nobody had yet offered any thanks verbally. So different from the Southern hospitality way of life where he grew up, Jake mused.

Here it was different, the pace of life was much faster. People always seemed to be in a rush, and they minded their own business for the most part. Sure, being so close to the big city must be nice and the landscape was quite beautiful at times, but he didn’t think this lifestyle was something he could ever get used to. It seemed too stressful, too impersonal. He would be glad to be back home when his job was finished.

The woman leaned over and offered Jake a box of donuts, disposable coffee cups, and a box of hot coffee. Jake was impressed.

“Thank you, that was very thoughtful!” Jake gushed, thrilled at the idea of hot coffee. He thought he felt warmth spread across his cheeks despite the chill in the air.

The woman stared back and smiled at Jake for a minute and then set her eyes on the road ahead. She waved as she pulled away.

“Wait!” Jake called out. “Wait, what was your name?” But the words were lost. The mysterious woman with the coffee and donuts was long gone.

“Guys!” he called out as his crew worked on cleaning up for the night. “Guys! Our guardian angel just appeared, and she brought coffee!”

The coffee and donuts were gladly received, but the idea that someone would go out of their way to show a random act of kindness truly touched Jake. He felt the warm liquid slide down his throat and knew that he would always remember the woman’s thoughtfulness. Who was he kidding? That woman’s beautiful face was what he would most remember. He just wished that he had gotten her name.

Book Review: Capturing the Earl's Love by Jane Lark

Capturing the Earl's Love (Marlow Intrigues #1.5) by Jane Lark
Genre: Adult Fiction (Historical Romance)
Date Published: May 29, 2014
Publisher: HarperImpulse

From Kindle bestselling Historical romance author, Jane Lark, comes a brand new FREE novella to accompany her breathtaking Marlow Intrigues series.

This novella tells the story of secondary characters from The Illicit Love of a Courtesan...

Rupert Stanforth, Earl of Morton, is exasperated by his sister's choice of friend. Meredith Divine clings, using Rowena's plain appearance as a foil for her auburn curls and fuller figure. He would break the friendship, but the more he complains, the more time the girls spend together. Ceasing his disagreement, he hopes the friendship will die, believing Meredith will take a wrong step soon...

Meredith clings to her only friend, Lady Rowena Stanforth, despite the disgusted looks thrown by Rowena's proud, judgmental brother. Lord Morton cannot abide Meredith because of her low standing, but Meredith's heart favours him . . . then in his single act of kindness, Meredith grasps an opportunity she cannot resist...

Capturing an Earl's Love is a book 1.5 in the Marlow Intrigues by Jane Lark. This little novella gives us the story of how Rupert and Meredith met. I think their romance was the smoothest of all the ones I've read so far in the Marlow Intrigues. They had a rough start because, Rupert was unsure of Meredith's intentions. It's funny because we usually wonder about the man's true intentions. So, it was a little bit of a role reversal than what you usually read which was a nice touch. I digress, these two were cute, and I enjoyed their story very much.

Capturing the Earl's Love by Jane Lark was kindly provided to me by the author & NetGalley for review. The opinions are my own.

Lord Rupert Stanforth, Earl of Morton, watched his sister, Rowena, approach.

She was smiling, and her friend, Meredith Divine, clung to her arm.

His gaze briefly passed over the other girl. He was increasingly convinced Miss Divine only kept Rowena as a friend because Rowena was the perfect foil to show off Miss Divine’s more striking looks. Her auburn curls glowed in the candlelight beside Rowena’s lacklustre, light-brown locks.

Miss Divine was also slightly taller, and a little fuller in the bust.

While they crossed the room, she appeared to press as close as she could to Rowena’s side, letting Rowena’s less impressionable looks make Miss Divine’s stand out among the white-clad debutantes in the ballroom.

“Rupert…”

His eyes focused on his sister once more. She was out of breath, having just completed a country dance, and her cheeks were flushed, while her eyes glowed, expressing the fun she was having.

“I want to introduce Meredith to Ellen. Will you escort us and do the honours? Meredith is dying to meet her.”

Mmm, now what is this little game? He glanced at Miss Divine only to receive a very bright but subtly restrained smile.

She was trying to win his approval.

He was not interested. He wished nothing to do with the little schemer. Her father was in some sort of trade. Rupert had not even wished Rowena to befriend Miss Divine, let alone become so thick with her. The two of them were inseparable; or rather, Miss Divine hung about Rowena like a moth around a flame. Except Miss Divine was no moth. Her beauty was far too vibrant.

Rupert was Rowena’s guardian. Their father had passed on long ago, so Rupert was responsible for keeping his sister safe. It fell to him to help her choose her friends wisely. Yet the more he disparaged Miss Divine, the more Rowena favoured the girl. He’d ceased his complaints. Their friendship had still blossomed. He’d hoped it would wither and die back. It had not—yet.

He expected Miss Divine to make a wrong step soon though, one which would open his sister’s eyes, and end this arm-in-arm behavior.

Book Review: Possession by Annie Oldham

Possession (Song and Shadow, #1) by Annie Oldham
Genre: Young Adult (Paranormal)
Date Published: October 31, 2014
Publisher: Self

Constance Jerome wants nothing more than to make it through her senior year of high school without being noticed. But when her mother drops the world's biggest bombshell, flying under the radar just isn't in the cards. It turns out Constance is a necromancer—one of the few who can travel the realms of the dead. Apparently it runs in the family. And now there's a threat coming: another necromancer with plans to disturb the living and the dead, and Constance and her mother are the only ones who can stop him. If only they knew who he was. Or what exactly he was up to. A quiet senior year isn't an option, and Constance must race to stop a high school apocalypse before the balance between the living and the dead is overturned.

Possession is the first book in the Song and Shadow series by Annie Oldham. I never really knew what a necromancer was before reading this book. I'd heard the term, but never gave it much thought. I always assumed they were some kind of witch that deals with the dead or something along those lines. As a general rule, I'm not a fan of witches, so I didn't know if I'd like the book or not, but I do like other books by this author so I wanted to give it a try. First of all, I learned that necromancers aren't really witches. So, I was glad for that. Second, the story is so well told that after the first few pages, I was already pulled too far into the life of Constance to turn back. The writing is very visual, without being overly descriptive which I love. Each character had depth, even if you don't realize it right away. I think this was a great start to what seems to me to be a unique and entertaining new series.

Possession by Annie Oldham was kindly provided to me by the author for review. The opinions are my own.

Her mother had the habit of putting on a certain facial expression whenever she and Constance reached a point in conversation when Constance was forced to admit that she was young and clueless and her mother was older and wiser; the look involved her mother barely raising her eyebrows and the left corner of her mouth turning up. It was the look she was currently wearing.

Constance dropped her plate in the sink a little louder than she had intended. “Just because I can admit to his physical beauty doesn’t mean he isn’t basically a toad on the inside.”

“Point taken. But you should at least give him a chance.”

“He’s had a chance. He looked like he threw up a little in his mouth when Mr. Mason asked me to tutor him.”

The knife her mother was holding hovered over the green chiles on the cutting board. She turned around. “He really looked like he threw up a little?”

Constance nodded.

“Yes, a toad on the inside then. Be careful, hon.” Then the knife resumed tap, tap, tapping across the cutting board.

Constance smiled. Her mother might burn awful candles and be a smidge overprotective about their old decorations, but she was pretty cool as far as moms went.

Tour! A Review and Teasers of And Forever by Danielle Sibarium

And Forever by Danielle Sibarium
Genre: Young Adult (Contemporary Romance)
Date Published: February 19, 2015
Publisher: Self

“Sometimes being with the one you love hurts more than being without them.”

“There’s nothing you can’t do if you want it bad enough.” This is the mantra Jordan Brewer drilled into my head since the day I met him. He convinced me nothing is out of my reach, not even him.

I love Jordan, and Jordan loves me, but something always gets in the way. I had to fight tooth and nail to convince him we belong together. Now he’s mine, but I’m not sure our love is strong enough to survive.

I’m away at school and Jordan’s playing drums for a local band. We hardly see each other, and when we do, he’s haunted by demons from his past. I’m struggling to fit in and he’s struggling with his ever-growing mountain of guilt. Will we be able to hold on to each other through the tough times, or will it all come tumbling down around us?

And Forever is the sequel to For Always by Danielle Sibaruim. I wasn't expecting to hear from Stephanie and Jordan again, but I'm glad there was more to their story. Stephanie is very insecure about her relationship with Jordan, and Jordan keeps secrets from her, making her even more insecure. They have a lot to work through within this story, and it's not an easy road. Whew! Jordan is intense! That's all I can say because I don't want to risk spoilers. Like For Always, I couldn't put this book down. There is something about Stephanie and Jordan that really grabs me.

And Forever by Danielle Sibarium was kindly provided to me by the author for review. The opinions are my own.

"Promise me something?"

Jordan's brows knit together, and there's not a hint of the playfulness we shared earlier. I can't imagine what has him looking so worried.

     "Anything."

I mean it, too. Because there isn't anything I wouldn't do for him.

     "Promise you won't drink?"

I hesitate. He takes that as a sign I don't want to agree. "If you want to drink, fine, just wait until I'm with you. This way I know you'll be safe."

     "You don't trust me?"

"Of course I trust you. You just . . . " He smoothes my hair, "Let's just say you don't always make the best decisions when you drink, and I won't be a few blocks away. That makes me nervous." He pulls me close, and takes a long, deep breath.

I hug my arms around him, and rest my head against his chest. I'm so lost to the thumping of his heart, I almost don't hear what he says next.

"I want to know you're safe. That's all."

     Perfect. He is absolutely perfect.

"Okay, I promise. No drinking unless I'm with you. But now I need you to promise something." I look up braving the intensity of his eyes.

He gives me a crooked smile, raises his eyebrow in a silent question, and my heart flutters just a little faster.

I look away. He's going to think I'm pathetic; like that isn't something he already knows about me. But he brought up the fact that we won't be a few blocks away from each other, and it terrifies me.

     "What's wrong, Steph?"

"Promise you won't forget about me."

"How you could think for a minute I'd be able to forget you is beyond me. Even if I were across the country, across the world, I wouldn't be able to forget about you." He rests his hands at the base of my neck, forcing me to look up at him. "That's why I'm here, standing in front of you. That's why I'm alive, because I can't forget about you. Ever.”

Check out my reviews some of Danielle Sibarium's other novels...

Danielle Sibarium grew up as an only child of divorced parents in Brooklyn, New York. Her imagination was developed at an early age. Surrounded by stuffed animals and imaginary friends, she transported herself into a fantasy world full of magic and wonder. Books were the gateway between her play world and reality. On any given summer afternoon she became Snow White sweeping and cooking for the dwarfs, or Cinderella waiting for the prince.

Danielle always loved dialogue and in elementary school began writing plays and short stories. This is when she began to understand she could not only bring her fantastical world to life for herself, but she could enchant others as well. And so she wrote. She wrote and wrote and wrote.

Sadly the first piece she ever sent out for publication of any sort was a letter to the editor of The Home News Tribune. It was a piece thanking the first responders for their bravery and selflessness on Sept 11th. It was chosen as letter of the week.

In 2007 Danielle collaborated with Charlotte Doreen Small to write songs for her CD More. Danielle wrote the lyrics for Take My Hand, and Goodbye, while Charlotte contributed the melody.
In October 2011 Danielle’s debut novel For Always was released. She Has since released Heart Waves and the second book in the Heart Waves series, Breaking Waves.

Danielle graduated from Farleigh Dickinson University with honors, and currently lives in New Jersey with her husband and three children. Check out my interview with Danielle!
