Exalted Tour: An Interview with Ella James & Giveaway!!

Thank you for visiting us along our stop off of the Exalted Blog Tour!! In celebrating the upcoming release of Exalted, today is dedicated to The Stained Series by Ella James, and she has kindly taken some time out of her busy schedule to answer a few questions for us!

How long have you been writing?
I loved to write as soon as I learned how. My dad wrote scholarly papers, and I would read them in elementary school and want to be able to sound as smart as him. ;) (This is how you know you're a giant dork). I always kept a journal, and I wrote some poetry that was published while I was in high school and college. I wrote for newspapers and magazines in college and afterward, and I got a degree in journalism. I started writing fiction in 2005 and haven't looked back. :)

What inspired you to write your first book?
I'd been working as a journalist - a newspaper reporter. I really loved it. I got a new job as a writer for another paper, but when I arrived in town to start work, they'd been bought out by a company that didn't like my driving record. I had a ticket going 93 in a 70 in the middle of the desert during a road trip that followed the same trek as Julia and Cayne's. ;) They wouldn't let me drive on the job, so I was stuck on the copy editing desk. I was so depressed by this, my then-boyfriend/now-husband suggested I start writing a book.

When you first started writing Stained, did you plan for it to be a series?
I did. I wrote it in 2006, right after I finished my "real" first book, which will never see the light of day. I planned for there to be three, I think, but I honestly can't remember. I was so clueless at the time, I only submitted Stained to five agents. When none of them wanted it, I thought it wasn't good and stuffed it in a drawer until Sept. 14, 2011, when I was, again, upset about having an agent pull out after having offered representation for an adult romance I wrote. My husband suggested I start putting some of my stuff on Amazon, and I was so fed up with the traditional process, I did. I was shocked that anyone bought it, but when I realized people liked it, I wrote the rest of the series. :)

What can you tell us about Exalted?
It's a lot darker than the other Stained Series books. That's about all I can say without giving things away. That, and it's the same fast-paced type of book that the others are.

Which of your characters do you relate to most and why?
This one's hard, because I have so many books that are not yet released. I have a lot of characters. Of the books out right now, I'd say probably Milo in HERE. I really like her. :)

What is a secret about you that nobody else knows?
There are two things I swore I'd never do as an adult: own my own business (my parents did, and advised against it) and work while my children were under 3. I now own a thriving business and work a lot. My son is 1. =/ Sometimes things don't turn out how you think they will, but I feel so very blessed that people are buying my books.

If your real life as a teenager was a Young Adult book, what would you, the main character, be like?
Wow, this is a great question. :) I'm afraid to say. Lol! Probably very introverted, not confident enough... Very private, but pretty good at being "social" if necessary. Very, very boy-crazy. :D I used to love to chase after hard-to-get guys and gossip with my friends about their crushes. I also had a more serious side, though. I felt like I had to hide that some in high school.

What book have you read too many times to count?
The Only Alien on the Planet. It's the book that made me want to write YA, and I recommend it to everyone. I also regularly reread Harry Potter and my other great fave, Wuthering Heights.

What is the best piece of writing advice you ever received?
There are so many! I'll try to roll a few things into one, which is basically just that it's possible for anyone to write a book. If you're going to become really great, you probably ought to have some natural inclination toward writing, but I'm not even sure that's necessary. It's all about finishing a book, and then another one, and then another one... The best way to learn to write is to write! :) Also, plot isn't something most people know unless they study it some, so don't expect your book to be riveting unless you've put a good bit of work into it. That's basically it. All those things helped me a ton. That, and a book called The Elements of Style, by Strunk & White.

What was one of the most surprising things you learned in creating your books?
That I can write a book! Lol. It's been so amazing to be able to do something I always wanted to do.

What do you like to do when you're not writing?
I love hanging out with my son and my husband. I love hiking and visiting rural places. Also, running. I've been able to get back into running recently for the first time since my son was born, and I forgot how much I love it. Other than that... good movies, good TV. I read a TON and it's my favorite pastime.

Are any of the things in your books based on real life experiences or purely all imagination? Mostly imagination, I'm sad to say. Small things are based on real experiences, like the kind of cars the Stained crew drives on their ventures are the same kinds I rented in Europe, and the road trip Julia and Cayne take is the same one I took with friends in college. I love Converse All-Stars and aliens and conspiracy theories. I think it would be amazing to have a boyfriend who had wings. I also really want to adopt a child one day, so that part of Julia's history is one that's important to me.

What was your favorite chapter (or part) to write and why?
The big reveal in HERE. :) If you've read it, you know what I mean. As a big sci-fi geek, I thought that was the bee's knees.

Thank you so much for stopping by Ella! It's been fun!

Stained Series Blog Tour: Character Interview with Cayne

Cayne is sitting in the same wing-backed chair that he and Julia have used during every interview for the Stained Series blog tour; they’ve been taking interviews to keep them busy while quarantined to their room at a ski resort in the Swiss Alps. (To learn more about their circumstances, read Chosen, TBR in June!) He’s got his right ankle resting on top of his left knee, and his hand is resting loosely on top of his ankle. Dressed in a gray wool sweater and dark jeans, he only looks a little bit too casual for the lush resort suite.

1. The first time you set your eyes on Julia, what was the first thought to cross your mind?
He presses his lips together thoughtfully and his eyebrows rise. “I ended up flat on my back in this warehouse where she was. When I woke up, she was leaning over me.” He smiles a little, one half of his mouth turning up. “She had—” he waves one hand beside his head— “all this hair. I think it was falling on my chest. And she had these brown eyes. Big brown eyes.” For half an instant, his face twists, like he knows he’s revealing more than he usually does and doesn’t necessarily like it. Whatever thought he’s having, he pushes past, because his face lightens again. “I thought she was beautiful,” he says, “but I didn’t want her around. Not for a while.”

2. If you could take Julia on a normal date, without the threat of being attacked by anything, what would you do and where would you go?
He leans forward a little, propping both hands on his knees, and looks curious—like he’s never really thought about this. He sits that way for what seems like a minute before leaning back in the chair and nodding. “Maybe the beach. Brazil has great beaches. I think I would take her to one of the isolated ones. Julia loves the beach.”

3. What is your happiest memory?
This time, Cayne’s face definitely darkens. The look lasts to long I think I have asked the wrong question. But it slowly lightens up and he grins – a huge, very handsome grin. To my shock, he actually laughs. “She showed me a…pillow fight. We had a pillow fight,” he amends. “Doing that with Julia… It was fun.”

4. We know you've been quite busy lately, but what do you like to do when you have spare time?
He shrugs; he seems to have loosened up. “I don’t really know. I haven’t had what you call ‘spare’ time in.... I have never had any time to spare. But if I did…” He shrugs again. “I like The Economist magazine. I like to read about stocks. And I like to be with Julia.”

5. Before Julia came along, what was your average day like?

This time he shakes his head. His lips are pursed again. After a second, he says, “It was not worth recounting. Honestly. But it required flying long-distances.”

6. How do you see your future?
“I don’t know,” he says honestly. “With Julia, if she wants it that way.” He glances out the window, where snow is falling, obscuring our view of the mountains. He smiles. “Somewhere warmer.”

7. Tell us a secret about yourself no one else knows?
He sits up a little straighter, looking almost…chipper? A silly grin completes the look. “I play a mean harmonica.”

8. You know I have to ask, boxers or briefs?
He smirks. “Boxer-briefs.”

We are so thankful Cayne was able to spend a little time with us today, and we're super excited to be apart of the Stained Series Blog Tour! A special thanks goes out to Ella James for making all this possible!

Stained Series Blog Tour: Review of Stolen by Ella James

Genre: Young Adult (Paranormal Romance)

The Blurb:
With Cayne's fate in the hands of his enemies and Julia spirited away to the covert Stained compound, the two are separated by impenetrable walls and a gulf of unanswered questions. Soon Julia learns the truth about the Stained and the plans they have for her, the compound is attacked, and a new group is running from an unwanted destiny, searching the globe in pursuit of the knowledge that just might save them all.

My Review:
Stolen is the second book in the Stained Series by Ella James. If you haven't read it yet, I highly recommend you read the first book, Stained, before you read this review. You can also check out my review of Stained.

Stolen picked up where Stained left off. Julia is brought to a compound where other Stained people are being held. While there, she meets some new friends and learns new things about herself and others like her. She also learns about Cayne's past. While we all knew from book one, his past couldn't have been a good one, this helps us know why he behaved the way he did in Stained. Stolen teased me with some new mysteries concerning Cayne as well. It's hard to say too much without giving a spoiler or two, so I won't. I can't wait to learn more in the next book, Chosen, which will be released next month!

A special thank you to Ella James for letting us be a part of the Stained Series Blog Tour!

With Julia is enigmatic hottie Cayne, who has his own score to settle with the half-demon, and who might be just as dangerous as the creature he and Julia hunt.

Listed as one of the Top 10 Books of 2011, Cayne voted one of 2011's Top 10 Book Boyfriends. Recipient of the Flamingnet Top Choice Award.

HERE:

Milo Mitchell's life used to be charmed, but that was before her family dissolved, she went a little crazy, and her best friends started acting more like strangers. Spending Saturday morning in a treehouse with a stun gun for company and a herd of deer for friends is the only exciting thing in her life...until she shoots a fawn and finds her dart stuck in a guy.

Her gorgeous victim is dressed in a Brioni tux and armed with a hanky. He has no idea who or where he is. Afraid her dart caused his amnesia, Milo takes him in, names him Nick, and vows to help him solve his mystery. Soon the pair find Nick's face in a newspaper obituary, and Nick begins to have strange, ethereal memories of Milo--who is sure she's never met him. Suddenly Nick knows things he shouldn't know and is doing things he shouldn't do. When the Department of Defense shows up, Nick and Milo run--toward a shocking conclusion that could destroy both their worlds. My review coming soon!

BEFORE YOU GO:
Margo Ford just became an heiress. Not the Paris Hilton kind. Her billions came after her father died and her insanely wealthy, insanely absent mother officially claimed her. Unfortunately, some terrorists noticed, and they hatched a plot to kidnap her. After a news report goes awry, reporting that Margo *has* been kidnapped, and her mother offers the humiliating sum of $500,000 for her return, Margo doesn't want anything to do with her *#$!@ of an egg donor. Then she is sentenced to a summer of "protection" on her mother's private island. Not the Oprah Winfrey kind. This one has an astronomical observatory filled with scientists, including Logan Greer, a super hot, super infuriating planet-hunter. Hiding out from kidnappers has never been so boring... until suddenly it isn't anymore. Read my review.
