Book Review! The Hazards of Skinny Dipping by Alyssa Rose Ivy

The Hazards of Skinny Dipping (Hazards #1) by Alyssa Rose Ivy
Genre: New Adult (Contemporary Romance)
Published: May 17, 2013
Publisher: Self

This isn't a deep book about first loves or self-discovery. If you want a book like that, I'd be happy to recommend one, but I don't have that kind of story to tell. Instead my story is about rash decisions and finding out that your dream guy is bad in bed. It's the story of when I finally went skinny dipping, and how my life was never the same again. Oh, and it's also the story of my freshman year of college and realizing Mr. Right might have been there all along.

The Hazards of Skinny Dipping is the first book in the Hazards series by Alyssa Rose Ivy. Yes! I'm finally reading the first book. I don't know how I got started reading this series out of order, but that's okay, they each stand alone just fine. This was Juliet's story. Juliet must be a looker. She pretty much has her pick of guys. .Dylan, Kyle, Reed. Of course she  doesn't see it that way, and her self insecurities mixed with high expectations cause her to get involved with a  complete jerk. Needless to say, Juliet's romance wasn't an easy one, but once she got her man, it was a sweet one.

The Hazards of Skinny Dipping by Alyssa Rose Ivy was kindly provided to me by the author for review. The opinions are my own.

Prologue

Skinny dipping was the last thing on my list. Of the five items, it was the hardest one for me. It wasn’t a bucket list or anything like that—I wasn’t thinking about death. It was a things-to-do-before-college list my cousin, Amy, made for me.

Now, I know what you’re thinking. This is going to be one of those stories about the death of a loved one spurring a girl down a path of self-discovery. It’s not. My cousin is alive and well, and at the time of this story was in Malawi with the Peace Corps. The list was her way of preparing me for the wilds of college (her words, not mine). Amy was under the impression that I was entirely unprepared for the life of a coed.

I still remember her exact words. We were hanging out in her room at her parents’ house while she packed. “Juliet, sweetheart, you know I love you, right?”

I glanced at her apprehensively. “Yeah…”

“So know that, when I say this, it’s out of love.” She tossed a huge pile of t-shirts into her large black duffel.

I tensed. “Should I be scared?”

“No.” She smiled her million-dollar, brings-guys-to-their-knees smile, and I knew I should actually be terrified.

“Okay.” I clasped my hands together, refusing to look at my chipped nail polish.

She flipped long, dark hair off her shoulder. “I’m worried about you.”

“Worried?”

“I don’t want you to totally drown next year.” She shoved a small, pink envelope into my hand. “Here, don’t open this until after graduation.”

“But you won’t be here. You leave tomorrow.”

She gave me her signature ‘duh’ look. “I’m well aware. Just open it, and do exactly what it says.”

“This kind of feels like the beginning of a YA novel.”

She laughed. “No. Trust me. The contents of this letter are not YA appropriate.”

My stomach dropped. What was Amy getting me into?

I brought the envelope home and stared at it about four times a day for the next two weeks. Obviously, I could have just opened it, but I’m usually kind of a rules person. Each time I started to tear open the envelope, I chickened out. I kept picturing Amy’s perfectly made up face yelling at me. I know that description doesn’t quite fit with a girl who joined the Peace Corps, but if you knew Amy, you’d understand. She was just Miss Perfect. It wasn’t until I got home from a graduation party at a friend’s house that I finally opened it. As I unfolded the pale pink paper, a Georgia driver’s license saying I was twenty-two fell into my lap. I set aside the fake ID and read the note.

Juliet’s Must-Do Before College List

Get drunk (and no, a buzz from sugary drinks does not qualify as drunk).

Go to a bar. Any bar will do, but you need to at least know what they look like inside.

Wear something you know would give your father a heart attack if he saw it.

Kiss a random guy, and don’t let it go further.

Go skinny dipping.

I’m sure you expect me to detail how I crossed the first four items off my list, but this story isn’t about the first four. It’s about what happened when I did number five.

Review & Excerpt Tour! The Hazards of Sleeping with a Friend by Alyssa Rose Ivy

The Hazards of Sleeping with a Friend (Hazards #4) by Alyssa Rose Ivy
Genre: New Adult (Contemporary Romance)
Published: March 26, 2015
Publisher: Self

Warning: Sleeping with a friend might change your life forever.

Sleeping with Kyle was never in the plans. Pretending to be his girlfriend was one thing, but letting our relationship become anything but platonic was another. The problem with mixing friendship with sex is that inevitably feelings get involved, and when that happens there's no turning back.

When Kyle's life fell apart around him, I needed to help, but doing that meant opening myself up to the most terrifying thing in the world—falling in love.

The cover is designed by Once Upon a Time Covers, and the Cover Model Photography is by K. Keeton.

The Hazards of Sleeping with a Friend is the fourth book in the Hazards series by Alyssa Rose Ivy. This is Jade and Kyle's story. They have a fun friendship to begin with. We're given both point of views within the story, which I really liked because I knew where each character stood on things from the beginning. We finally know why Jade is so closed off. I really liked her. I liked Kyle too. These two are a good fit. As with all of Alyssa Rose Ivy's books, I was fully pulled into the lives of these characters, and I completely lose myself in their world.

After a fabulous dinner, a shared bottle of wine, and a starry night walk on the beach, we eventually made it to bed. I was exhausted from the sun, but excited to spend a night with Kyle when I wasn’t worried about Savy and Glen overhearing.

“Could you get naked already?” I teased Kyle. He was taking his time that night.

“In a hurry, are you?” He grinned before running his lips down my neck. “I don’t see any reason to rush things tonight.”

“Of course you don’t. As usual I’m the one who wants it more.” I was only half kidding.

“Is that what you think?” He moved over me. His grin widened. “That I don’t want you?”

I nodded, ignoring that I was only in a bra and underwear while he still had his shorts on.

“It’s exactly the opposite.” He gently pulled one of my bra straps down my shoulder. “I don’t like rushing things. I want to savor every moment.”

“I could understand if this was the first time, but it’s not. We do this all the time now.”

“We do. Don’t we?” He pulled down my other bra strap. “Funny how that happened.”

“You know very well how it happened.” I tried to calm down my body. No guy had ever made me want them more than Kyle. You’d think after all the times we spent together I wouldn’t be as affected, but it had only gotten worse.

“Do I?” He unbuttoned his shorts before getting up just enough to toss them off.

“Yes. You do.”

He left tiny kisses on my shoulder while he reached around and unclasped my bra. “Was it because you threatened to start having random hook-up sex?”

“No. It was because you made me pretend to be your fake girlfriend.”

“Made you?” He tossed my bra where he’d thrown his pants. “I seem to remember you agreeing without a fight.”

“That’s not how I remember it.”

Release & Review! The Hazards of Mistletoe by Alyssa Rose Ivy

The Hazards of Mistletoe (Hazards #3.5) by Alyssa Rose Ivy
Genre: New Adult (Contemporary Romance)
Published: November 20, 2014
Publisher: Self

One snowy Christmas Eve, one mistletoe kiss, one friendship changed forever.

Don’t underestimate the power of mistletoe. It looks innocent enough, but a single branch has the potential to change your life. One mistletoe kiss led to the most embarrassing night of my life, but thankfully by the next Christmas I ended up exactly where I was supposed to be.

The Hazards of Mistletoe is a novella in the Hazards series by Alyssa Rose Ivy. Savy and Glen are pretty adorable. Their friendship is an unusual one in that they only see each other once or twice each year, but they've become best friends by keeping in touch all through the year while apart. This was a cute little novella that put me in the holiday spirit.

“Ice skating and hot cocoa? What are you buttering me up for?” I sat down on the bench and unlaced my skates. The snow was falling a little bit heavier, but the flakes were still light and more pleasant than a nuisance.

“I’m just enjoying an evening with a beautiful woman. I do have a romantic side you know.”

“Romantic?” What was Glen playing at? I’d had a crush on him for years, but things had stayed completely platonic. We were good friends who saw each other once a year, and teased each other through text messages and late night phone calls. That was it.

He didn’t hear me. He was already in line to return our skates. I waited for him to return with my boots, and not for the first time I was glad I’d worn wool socks. It was cold during the day, but the nights were absolutely freezing.

“Here you go, my lady.” He bent down and proceeded to put my foot into my boot.

I pulled away from him. “Knock it off. What’s gotten into you tonight?” As charming as Glen was being something seemed off with him. I wondered if maybe I wasn’t the only one who was upset.

He proceeded to move on to my next boot. “It’s Christmas Eve. Aren’t you Miss Holiday Spirit?”

“Usually.”

“Exactly.” He put on his shoes and tugged on my hand to pull me to standing. “Let’s get those hot chocolates.”

The line at the café on the other side of the rink was nearly out the door, but I was enjoying Glen’s company so much I didn’t mind.

He insisted on buying my hot cocoa for me, and considering he’d already paid for my skate rental, I was starting to feel uncomfortable. Glen had all the money he could ever need, but I wasn’t used to guys buying me anything. My dating experience wasn’t extensive, and it involved boys who were all about going dutch. “I really don’t mind paying.”

“Yeah, but I want to pay. Stop arguing and enjoy yourself.” He lightly bumped his shoulder into mine.

“Well, thanks.”

We walked around the village sipping our hot chocolate and not saying much. After a while we took a seat on a bench. It was underneath a tree, and the pine needles blocked some of the falling snow. I closed my eyes and listened to the chatter of people walking by mixed with the low hum of holiday music.

“You guys need to kiss.”

I opened my eyes and saw a girl staring at us. “You’re sitting under mistletoe. That’s the rules. You’re under mistletoe, you kiss.”

I looked up. Sure enough there was mistletoe hanging over us from the tree. It wasn’t real, it was just the decorative stuff they used, but it had the same unmistakable appearance.

Glen put an arm around me. “I think she’s right, Savy.”

I turned to glare at him. “Don’t even start.”

“Why not? Scared to kiss me?” he teased.

Yes. I was scared. Terrified. This was Glen. Kissing him wasn’t something I was prepared to do casually while sitting on a bench in the snow with a bunch of onlookers. Of course I couldn’t tell him that though. “Why would I be scared?”

“I don’t know. Just checking.” He got a twinkle in his eye. That twinkle should have given me all the warning I needed, but it didn’t. I was wholly unprepared when his lips made contact with mine. They were warm and soft, and they moved perfectly against mine. I kissed him back, desperately wanting to know what his mouth tasted like, and if his tongue felt half as good as his lips.
