Release Day Review! Wilt by Nikki Rae

Wilt (The Order #2) by Nikki Rae
Genre: Adult Fiction (Dark Romance/Erotica)
Expected Release Date: June 30, 2018
Publisher: Self

When she was sold to Master Elliot Lyon of House Chimera, Fawn could have never imagined he was the same person as Elliot, the man beneath a well placed mask. A victim. Just like her. She would have never thought he was grooming her for the Wolf she’d already escaped once. That he planned to deliver her to the beast’s jaws in exchange for his wife. Master Jäger will stop at nothing to have her—even if that means using others as collateral. With more than just their lives on the line, Fawn must become someone else, and Master Lyon distances himself further from Elliot as her transfer looms.
The roots of the Order run deep within them, but Fawn is beginning to realize another bond has formed between her and her Owner, a man she vowed to destroy along with the rest of their tangled branches.
In a world where trust is just a tool and love isn’t meant for people like them, Fawn is determined to beat the powerful at their own elaborate games of make-believe. Even the man who Owns her.

Wilt is the second book in The Order Series by Nikki Rae.

Poor Fawn has this Stockholm-ish situation going on with Elliot. It's cyclic with them. She loves him, or thinks she does, because he gives her just enough love and the feeling of safety she needs. Then he does something to show his true colors once again, completely obliterating the safety net. She wisens up. He's sorry, and charming, and lures her back in. I think some times he really was sorry. A lot of abusers are, until it starts all over again. It was like the cycle of a real life abusive relationship, except Fawn is literally owned by him. So, she's trapped.

Any excuses I may have made for Elliot's behavior in the last book are out the window now. I don't like him. I officially wrote him off with the whole Mia situation. Just no. Everything after that only further cemented my feelings towards him. There is no excuse for certain things he said and did, and there's definitely no excuse for things he allowed to be done to Fawn. None of the reasons presented were a good enough excuse for his behavior. Ultimately, Fawn and Elliot may want the same thing, but a part of him likes the power. A part of him likes hurting Fawn physically, emotionally, and mentally. A part of him simply likes being evil. Maybe he wants to be the good guy. I'm not sure. I think he wants to want to be the good guy, but he enjoys the power and control more. I get it. It's all he's known. He has his own demons to fight because of his past, but he's not in the past anymore. You either marry it or become it. He's become it. That's how I see him anyway. I just can't see him as a potential good guy. Not anymore.

This is one of those books where I'm just not sure how I feel about it. I'm still so mad at Elliot right now for so many things. I'm mad at a lot of the characters, but we've known their nature. We're supposed to hate them. Elliot is more complicated to explain.

Anyway, so it definitely brings out many strong emotions. That's a talent this writer has. She really makes you feel. You can hate the character, but you're going to have all kinds of other really strong feels as well. She's truly gifted with her words. Also, love it..hate it...I still couldn't stop reading it, so there is that too. Morbid curiosity maybe? Probably, but it's not just that. I've grown genuinely attached to Fawn. I want to see her take them all down. (Except for maybe Marius.)

Warning: There is rape within this story, which I hate reading. I know it happens a lot within this particular world. I was hoping we wouldn't have to see it though. On the upside, it's not graphically written.

The ARC of Wilt by Nikki Rae was kindly provided to me by the author for review. The opinions are my own.

Master Lyon looked more than comfortable with her in his arms, fingers digging into her thighs through her dress. When I looked at his face, he still held the same grin. I wanted to wrap my hands around his neck. “Did you like watching, Doe?”
Next to him, his cigarette sat in a crystal ashtray on the arm of the seat, smoking down to nothing but a trail of dust. He hadn’t touched it once since that woman had returned to him. “No, sir,” I whispered, afraid if I used any more force I would scream.
Master Lyon cocked his head to the side and Mia gave me a mock-frown. “No?” he asked.
I stared back at him. “No, sir. I’m sure.” I could have left off the last part, but the small amount of control it made me believe I had was worth it.
His grin only widened as he leaned into Mia’s shoulder so her could coo in her ear, “I’ve trained her to be very loyal to her Owner.” He tucked a strand of hair behind her ear and she closed her eyes and smiled as his fingers lingered on her chin. “But I’m afraid it makes her quite possessive of me.”
Mia stared down at me. It wasn’t until now that I could see the glint of evil all Members had in their eyes. The higher up they were on the food chain, the less human they were. Sooner or later, they all turned into sharks with dead black eyes. Her legs dangled off his thigh as she kissed his cheek. “I don’t blame her.” She didn’t look away from me even as her lips remained on my Owner’s skin. “I can see why she would be protective of you.” She ran her fingers through his hair.
“I’ve told her many times that she’s to be transferred,” he said, “but I think you and I can teach her that I am not the one who belongs to her.”

Book Review: For Love and Honor by Jody Hedlund

For Love and Honor (An Uncertain Choice #3) by Jody Hedlund
Genre: Young Adult (Historical Romance/Christian Fiction)
Date Published: March 7, 2017
Publisher: Zondervan

Lady Sabine is harboring a skin blemish, one, that if revealed, could cause her to be branded as a witch, put her life in danger, and damage her chances of making a good marriage. After all, what nobleman would want to marry a woman so flawed?

Sir Bennet is returning home to protect his family from an imminent attack by neighboring lords who seek repayment of debts. Without fortune or means to pay those debts, Sir Bennet realizes his only option is to make a marriage match with a wealthy noblewoman. As a man of honor, he loathes the idea of courting a woman for her money, but with time running out for his family’s safety, what other choice does he have?

As Lady Sabine and Sir Bennet are thrust together under dangerous circumstances, will they both be able to learn to trust each other enough to share their deepest secrets? Or will those secrets ultimately lead to their demise?

For Love and Honor is the third book in the An Uncertain Choice series by Jody Hedlund. Remember Sir Bennett from the first book? This is his story. Sir Bennett is in need of funds, so he needs to marry into money. Sabine has a birthmark that the guys find undesirable, so they aren't exactly banging down her door. She's a strong girl though. She knows she can survive without a man. Her grandmother has other plans though. This story was fun and adventurous. I loved the interactions between Sir Bennett and Sabine. They were so stinkin' cute! Their growth as characters were also a fun thing. I've enjoyed this series quite a bit so far, and I definitely recommend it.

Book Review: Hello Stranger by Lisa Kleypas

Hello Stranger (The Ravenels #3) by Lisa Kleypas
Genre: Adult Fiction (Historical Romance)
Date Published: February 27, 2018
Publisher: Avon

A woman who defies her time

Dr. Garrett Gibson, the only female physician in England, is as daring and independent as any man—why not take her pleasures like one? Yet she has never been tempted to embark on an affair, until now. Ethan Ransom, a former detective for Scotland Yard, is as gallant as he is secretive, a rumored assassin whose true loyalties are a mystery. For one exhilarating night, they give in to their potent attraction before becoming strangers again.

A man who breaks every rule

As a Ravenel by-blow spurned by his father, Ethan has little interest in polite society, yet he is captivated by the bold and beautiful Garrett. Despite their vow to resist each other after that sublime night, she is soon drawn into his most dangerous assignment yet. When the mission goes wrong, it will take all of Garrett's skill and courage to save him. As they face the menace of a treacherous government plot, Ethan is willing to take any risk for the love of the most extraordinary woman he's ever known.

Hello Stranger is the third book in The Ravenels series by Lisa Kleypas. I was really looking forward to reading this book. (Not as much as I'm looking forward to West's story, because, I mean come one. He's West! But, Garrett has had me intrigued since she first appeared in this series.) If you've read the previous books, you probably sensed the chemistry between Garrett and Ransom. You don't have to read the previous books to enjoy this one, but I definitely recommend them. Garrett is a brave lady. She's got more backbone than most of the men around her. Ransom is an unlikely match for her, but they are kinda perfect for each other. There's a healthy dose of bantering too, and you know how much I love bantering. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and I'm looking forward to the next one. Rumor has it the next book is West's! Finally! *wink*

He heard her muffled chuckle. She continued to lean against him while the trio of constables expressed sympathy for the unfortunate patient. Eventually the men departed with a chorus of hearty farewells. Ethan discovered that his other arm had stolen around Garrett. Making himself let go of her was like trying to uncoil a steel spring.

“You should go up to your father now,” he said with difficulty.

“Eliza will look after him while I take a few minutes to show you some slides. I have insect wings . . . pollen grains . . . flower petals . . . What would you like to see?”

“The inside of a hansom cab,” he said softly. “I can’t be alone with you, darlin’.”

Garrett touched the edges of his vest, fingers clamping on the thin leather. “Ethan.” A blush rose in her face, like light glowing through pink frosted glass. “I don’t want to end this. We . . . we could meet in secret, now and then. No one would have to know. We would make no claims on each other. We’ll just . . . do as we please.”

The way she fumbled with the words, so unlike her usual precise way of speaking, devastated Ethan. He could only guess what it cost her to lay open her pride like this. He wasn’t certain what she was offering, or even if she knew. Not that it mattered. He wanted, craved, needed anything she was willing to give. But he had to make her understand that it was impossible. And even if it were, the idea was beneath her.

“Have you had that kind of arrangement with a man before?” he brought himself to ask.

Her eyes were the green of deep summer and lush growing things. “I’m a woman who makes her own decisions and handles the consequences.”

“That means no,” Ethan said softly. At her silence, he continued, “You’d be risking your reputation. Your career.”

“Believe me, I understand that better than you.”

“Have you ever shared a bed with a man? Even once?”

“Why is that relevant?”

Her evasive response sent a pleasure-pang down to the pit of his stomach. “That means no,” he said again, his voice even softer than before. He took a slow breath, trying to steady himself, while his blood sang with the knowledge that she’d been waiting for him. She was meant to be his. God, he wanted her beyond any reckoning of earth or heaven. But her well-being mattered a thousand times more than his own desires.

“Garrett . . . I’m a man full o’ trouble. When I vowed to let nothing harm you, I included myself on that list.”

A frown crimped her forehead. She closed her grip on his vest until her fists were tight as pine knots. “I’m not afraid of you, or your trouble.” Her green eyes were narrowed and intent as she tugged him closer. “Kiss me,” she urged in a whisper.

“I have to go,” he said shortly, and pulled back while he was still able.

But Garrett moved with him, her hands reaching up to grip his head on either side, the way he’d taught her at Baujart’s. The strength of her fingers electrified him.

“Kiss me,” she commanded, “or I’ll break your nose.”

The threat startled a ragged laugh from him. He shook his head as he looked at her, this fearsomely capable woman who loved geese and was afraid of spaghetti, and could either wield a scalpel in a complex surgical procedure or use it as a throwing-knife.

There had always been a cold streak in him, but he couldn’t seem to find it now, when he needed it most. He was breaking apart inside. He would never be the same after this.

“Christ, you’ve ruined me,” he whispered.

His arms went around her, one hand gripping the heavy silken mass of her braided chignon. She guided his head down, and he lost the battle, all his will vanquished as he began to kiss her as if the world were about to end.

For him, it was.

Book Review: Devil in Spring by Lisa Kleypas

Devil in Spring (The Ravenels #3) by Lisa Kleypas
Genre: Adult Fiction (Historical Romance)
Date Published: February 21, 2017
Publisher: Avon

An eccentric wallflower…

Most debutantes dream of finding a husband. Lady Pandora Ravenel has different plans. The ambitious young beauty would much rather stay at home and plot out her new board game business than take part in the London Season. But one night at a glittering society ball, she’s ensnared in a scandal with a wickedly handsome stranger.

A cynical rake…

After years of evading marital traps with ease, Gabriel, Lord St. Vincent, has finally been caught-by a rebellious girl who couldn’t be less suitable. In fact, she wants nothing to do with him. But Gabriel finds the high-spirited Pandora irresistible. He’ll do whatever it takes to possess her, even if their marriage of convenience turns out to be the devil’s own bargain.

A perilous plot…

After succumbing to Gabriel’s skilled and sensuous persuasion, Pandora agrees to become his bride. But soon she discovers that her entrepreneurial endeavors have accidentally involved her in a dangerous conspiracy—and only her husband can keep her safe. As Gabriel protects her from their unknown adversaries, they realize their devil’s bargain may just turn out to be a match made in heaven...

Devil in Spring is the third book in the Ravenels series by Lisa Kleypas. This is Pandora's story. This one is definitely my favorite so far. The drama aspect of this story did nothing for me, I was neither here nor there with it. Their romance, chemistry, and the bantering... that's where it's at! Gabriel is perfect for her. He takes her quirks in stride. They have some of the best bantering sessions. They go back and forth. Neither one lets the other off easy, and they are hilarious. We also get some appearances from characters in the previous books in this series, so we can see how those couples are doing.

I am having so much fun with this series, and from what I've read about the Wallflowers series, I think I need to go back and read those books too. So much to read! So little time!!
