Book Review: Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi

Shatter Me (Shatter Me #1) by Tahereh Mafi
Genre: Young Adult (Paranormal Romance/Dystopian)
Date Published: November 15, 2011
Publisher: HarperCollins

Juliette hasn’t touched anyone in exactly 264 days.

The last time she did, it was an accident, but The Reestablishment locked her up for murder. No one knows why Juliette’s touch is fatal. As long as she doesn’t hurt anyone else, no one really cares. The world is too busy crumbling to pieces to pay attention to a 17-year-old girl. Diseases are destroying the population, food is hard to find, birds don’t fly anymore, and the clouds are the wrong color.

The Reestablishment said their way was the only way to fix things, so they threw Juliette in a cell. Now so many people are dead that the survivors are whispering war – and The Reestablishment has changed its mind. Maybe Juliette is more than a tortured soul stuffed into a poisonous body. Maybe she’s exactly what they need right now.

Juliette has to make a choice: Be a weapon. Or be a warrior.

Shatter Me is the first book in the Shatter Me series by Tahereh Mafi. With one touch, she can kill a person, so Juliette has been locked away from the world. She is a touch crazy in the beginning because of it. The author's unique writing style perfectly captures this insanity. You can watch her progressively improve and relapse through the book. Two steps forward, one step back. Her improvement is subtle, but it's there.

The romance keeps you guessing. Adam has his own issues, and I questioned his loyalty a few times. I almost felt like there was going to be a love triangle. At times, I wanted Warner to come around. I think he has the potential to, but I don't know that he'll allow it of himself. He enjoys being wicked way too much. However, I think he will fall in love with Juliette in his own deranged way if he hasn't already. There's just something about him that I like. Each character is unhinged to an extent. None of them are a pretty picture of mental health. I think this is a product of the horrible world they now live in. This also kept things interesting. I'm so curious and excited to see where this series goes.
