Possession Spotlight!! Author Interview!! Scavenger Hunt!!

Today, I'm one of the stops on the Possession series scavenger hunt! The third and final book, ABANDON, hit shelves June 4! I'm so excited to have Elana Johnson on my blog today.

How long have you been writing?
I started writing in late 2007, so about 6 years now.

What inspired you to first start writing the Possession Series?
I read a great dystopian book in early 2008, and I wanted to write a book “like that.” I didn’t know what dystopian was at the time, but I did some research, and started writing Possession a few weeks later.

What is a secret about you that nobody else knows?
Gosh, I don’t know! Maybe that I secretly want to live in the Goodgrounds with Vi – for just one day.

If your real life was a fictional book, what would you, the main character, be like?
In fiction? I’d be fearless, and say all the things I want to say but don’t have the courage to say in real life.

What book have you read too many times to count?
I used to re-read books, but I don’t anymore. There are just SO MANY out there, that I can’t stand to take time to read one I’ve already read. Before I started writing though, I read Harry Potter over and over.

What is the best piece of writing advice you ever received?
I can’t remember who told me this, or if it’s just something I’ve learned over the years. But the best advice I could give or get is this: It’s okay to practice writing. Not every word has to be perfect the first time. Not every word I write has to be read. No one sees the practice that goes into the performance, but it’s crucial.

If you could hop into the life of any fictional character, who would it be and why?
Harry Potter! I want to go to Hogwarts so bad – and meet Professor Snape!

What was one of the most surprising things you learned in creating your books?
Every author’s process is different. I spent a lot of time beating myself up because I didn’t write the way other people do. I’ve learned that the way art is created is different for each creator – and that surprised me. What do you like to do when you're not writing? I’m a huge lover of reality TV. Survivor, The Amazing Race, Chopped, I love it all. So if I’m not writing, I’m watching TV. Productive, I know.

Are any of the things in your books based on real life experiences or purely all imagination?
The situations are all imagined, but the characterizations and personality quirks? Those may or may not be based on people I know in real life. Today's scavenger hunt can begin here! Somewhere on this map of the Association is the winning city. Elana has mentioned the city here in this interview, and you can find references to it in all of today's posts. (See complete blog tour here)

The Blurb:
seduced by power,
broken by control,
and consumed by love...

Vi has made her choice between Jag and Zenn, and the Resistance may have suffered for it. But with the Thinkers as strong as ever, the rebels still have a job to do. Vi knows better than anyone that there's more at stake than a few broken hearts.

But there is a traitor among them...and the choices he makes could lead to the total destruction of everything Vi has fought for.

Vi, Jag, and Zenn must set their problems aside for the Resistance to have any hope of ending the Thinkers' reign. Their success means everything...and their failure means death.

  1. Great interview. I agree with Elana that everyone's writing process is different. And I'd definitely want to go to Hogwarts! I love this series and am so excited for Elana!
