Book Review: Colors Like Memories by Meradeth Houston

Genre: Young Adult (Fantasy Romance)
Date Published: May 11, 2012
Publisher: MuseItUp Publishing

The Blurb:
Julia has a secret: she killed the guy she loved. It was an accident—sort of.

Julia is a Sary, the soul of a child who died before taking her first breath. Without this 'breath of life' she and others like her must help those on the verge of suicide. It's a job Julia used to enjoy, until the accident that claimed her boyfriend’s life—an accident she knows was her fault. If living with the guilt weren't enough, she's now assigned to help a girl dealing with the loss of her mother, something Julia's not exactly the best role model for. If she can't figure out a way to help her, Julia's going to lose her position in the Sary, something she swore to her boyfriend would never happen.

My Review:
Colors Like Memories is the debut novel by Meradeth Houston. I didn't really know what to expect from this book, but I was pleasantly surprised by it. The book never mentions angels, but the Sary seem like a type of Guardian Angel. They become a part of the human's life, so they can better protect them. The story presents you with segments from Julia's past and her life with Derek to segments from the present and a possible new love interest, who I'm very curious about. these two perspectives fit together to tell two stories within Julia's life that weave perfectly together into one. Colors Like Memories grabbed my attention from the very beginning and never let it go. I stalked the authors website to find there will be more books about the Sary. I hope this means there will be more books along this story line. I think there is so much left to Julia's story. There's more I need to know. I want more!

Colors Like Memories by Meradeth Houston was provided to me by the author for review. The opinions are my own.

About the Author:
Meradeth’s never been a big fan of talking about herself, but if you really want to know, here are some random tidbits about her:

She’s a Northern California girl. This generally means she talks too fast and use "like" a lot. When she’s not writing, she’s sequencing dead people’s DNA. For fun!

She’s been writing since she was 11 years old. It's her hobby, her passion, and she’s so happy to get to share her work!

If she could have a super-power, it would totally be flying. Which is a little strange, because she’s terrified of heights.

No matter how hard she tries to cover up the marks her monsters have left behind, they never truly go away, and Myles’ monsters are no different.

Once again, Sophie’s caught between life and death, but this time, only she can save herself.

My Review:
Sun Poisoned is the second book in the Sunshine Series by Nikki Rae. If you haven't read Sunshine yet, you definitely need to before reading Sun Poisoned. While you're at it, check out my review for Sunshine too!

Sun Poisoned wasn't as emotional as Sunshine, which isn't a bad thing. Sophie is a survivor, and you see that in a huge way in this book. Just when you think things are looking up for poor little Sophie, she gets blind sided by life again and again. I was frustrated by all the lies this time around. It's time for some honesty. I'm hoping we'll see some of that in the next book. Her ex-boyfriend makes a brief appearance, and if you read Sunshine, you're probably thinking that's a bad thing. It probably is, but he knows something. I want to know what he knows!! The Sunshine Series is turning into something very different from any of the vampire books out there. I'm anxious for more!

My Review:
Glass Frost is the second book in the First Frost Series by Liz DeJesus. If you haven't read First Frost yet, you need to read it before reading Glass Frost. Check out my review of First Frost too. Glass Frost lets us meet some new characters and new villains. We're placed in some new situations as well. I enjoyed meeting Snow White's Dwarves the most. The romances and how the couples respond to each other and their ever changing situations are exciting and believable. They don't just jump head first into their relationships. They are thinking things through. I love how the First Frost Series not only brings fairy tale characters that we've all grown up with to life, but it brings them into the present in delightful ways. Liz DeJesus has put together this world so well that it's easy to imagine it's existence, and I want it to be real. I'm anxious for more!

Killing Sarai by J.A. Redmerski Release Event!

Genre: New Adult (Romantic Suspense)
Date Published: June 20, 2013
Publisher: Self
Release Coordinator: AToMR

The Blurb:
From the author of the New York Times, USA Today & Wall Street Journal bestselling novel, THE EDGE OF NEVER, comes a story of passion and survival…

Sarai was only fourteen when her mother uprooted her to live in Mexico with a notorious drug lord. Over time she forgot what it was like to live a normal life, but she never let go of her hope to escape the compound where she has been held for the past nine years.

Victor is a cold-blooded assassin who, like Sarai, has known only death and violence since he was a young boy. When Victor arrives at the compound to collect details and payment for a hit, Sarai sees him as her only opportunity for escape. But things don’t go as planned and instead of finding transport back to Tucson, she finds herself free from one dangerous man and caught in the clutches of another.

While on the run, Victor strays from his primal nature as he succumbs to his conscience and resolves to help Sarai. As they grow closer, he finds himself willing to risk everything to keep her alive; even his relationship with his devoted brother and liaison, Niklas, who now like everyone else wants Sarai dead.

As Victor and Sarai slowly build a trust, the differences between them seem to lessen, and an unlikely attraction intensifies. But Victor’s brutal skills and experience may not be enough in the end to save her, as the power she unknowingly holds over him may ultimately be what gets her killed.

This is their story…

The Excerpt:
I raise the gun a little higher, settling the barrel at the back of her head, but not touching it. I don’t want her to be afraid before she dies and although I know she fears nothing, death is something we all fear in our final moment even if only the smallest part of us is conscious of it. I don’t want her to fear it at all and she can’t if she doesn’t know that it’s happening.

“How old were you when you became what you are?” she asks.

Caught off guard by the question and maybe more-so by the shifting of the mood, I hesitate before answering.

“I was nine.”

She sniffles and wipes her eyes with the hand near her cheek.

“You were very young,” she goes on. “I guess in a way like me, you never had a chance to live a life of your choosing. I guess maybe we aren’t really so different from each other.” She pauses. “Except I might be more like your brother than I care to admit. He’s as angry as I am.”

I release my finger from the trigger and slowly, so she doesn’t know, move the barrel away from the back of her head.

“It must’ve been hard growing up with Niklas,” she says. I set the gun back on the bed next to me and before I know what I’m doing I’m cradling the back of her head in my hand again.

Fall For Me Tour Part 2!! A Review of Fall for Me by K.A. Last!!!

Genre: Young Adult (Paranormal Romance)
Date Published: January 17, 2013
Publisher: Self

The Blurb:
“Angels aren’t supposed to fall in love, especially with each other. But for the record, you were worth it.”

Grace Tate is a Protection Angel and Vampire Hunter, and she has always followed the rules. But some rules are made to be broken…

Until now the fight against evil has been simple, and falling in love was never part of the plan. So what happens when it’s beyond Grace’s control, and when she least expects it she falls for the wrong person?

All hell breaks loose, that’s what.

At Hopetown Valley High, not everything is as it seems, and the one person Grace thought was her enemy becomes her most important ally.

Blood will be shed, lives will be lost and friendships will be tested. It all comes down to one decision, and when Grace tries to save all those dear to her, she realises not everyone can be—or wants to be—saved.

My Review:
Fall For Me by K.A. Last is the first book in the Tate Chronicles. After reading, Fall for Me, I can see why they recommend that you read it before reading the prequel, Sacrifice. If you haven't read either of these books, I too, recommend that you read Fall for Me first. With that being said, reading the books in this order still didn't hinder my enjoyment of them. This book keeps you on your toes as it throws things at you that you don't see coming. I loved that about this book. Grace is faced with some very tough decisions. Fall for Me doesn't put heaven and angels in a very nice light, which bothered me quite a bit, but it's fiction and it sure does make for a good story.

Fall For Me Tour Part 1!! A Review of Sacrifice by K.A. Last!!!

Genre: Young Adult (Paranormal Romance)
Date Published: May 2013
Publisher: Self

The Blurb:
Sacrifice is a 23,000 word prequel to Fall For Me. It tells the story of Grace and Seth, and what happened in that castle. It is meant to be read after Fall For Me, although it can be read first...

Seth’s heart is breaking. He knows his decision will hurt the one person he keeps breathing for, but he can’t take it anymore. He can’t be near Grace knowing she will always be just out of reach.

Grace is oblivious to Seth’s turmoil. She loves him unconditionally, but not in the way he wants. They both know that in Heaven physical love is forbidden, and to break the rules is to defy everything they’ve ever been taught.

When Grace and Seth are sent on a mission to save a young mother and her unborn child, Grace must face the fact that Seth won’t be returning home. She doesn’t understand Seth’s decision and hates him for it. But what neither of them realise is how big a part that single decision will play in shaping their entire future.

What would you sacrifice for the one you love?

My Review:
Sacrifice is the prequel to Fall For Me which is the first book in the Tate Chronicles. You can read either book first, however, it was recommended that you read Fall for Me before Sacrifice. I read Sacrifice first, since I hadn't received Fall For Me yet at the time. I didn't feel like I missed anything by reading it in this order. In fact, it made me want to read Fall For Me that much more. This book gave me a taste of the story to come. It was short and to the point, like any decent prequel should be. It gave you glimpses into the lives Grace has been assigned to right up to the life she is in when Fall For Me begins. If you've already read Fall For Me, I highly recommend that you read Sacrifice!

Sacrifice by K.A. Last  was provided to me by Xpresso Tours for review. The opinions are my own.

My Review:
Dragonfly is the first book in the Dragonfly Series by Leigh T. Moore. This is a story full of secrets, romance, and new beginnings. The romance is a love triangle, and I have a clear favorite. Team Julian all the way. I liked Jack at first, but how he treated Anna really frustrated me. She kept going back to him, which frustrated me even more. She's a strong person, and I like her as a character. I just hope she grows some more back bone in her responses to Jack as the series progresses. The plot is full and completely engaging. There are so many secrets and mysteries behind the scenes of this story. Everyone has a skeleton or two in their closet and most of them seem to interweave into each others lives whether they know it yet or not. The story was well put together and thought out. Dragonfly was sort of like a puzzle. Every one behaved the way they did for a reason, and the more you read the more it all pieces together. It kept me glued to the book.

Dragonfly by Leigh T. Moore was provided to me by the author for review. The opinions are my own.

You can buy Dragonfly at: Amazon, Barnes & Noble, & iTunes!
The Excerpt:
Falling in Love Changes Everything…

“C’mon,” Julian said, helping me stand. “Let’s blow off this party and catch a movie or go to Scoops. This isn’t our scene.”

I shook my head. “I just really want to go home.” The tears were trying to start again. “Can I just go home now?”

“Sure,” he said, holding my cheek. I took a limping step, and he stopped. “Does it hurt to walk?”

My leg was throbbing. I nodded, looking down, and before I realized what was happening, he was lifting me in his arms.

“Julian, wait,” I held his shoulders. “I’m too heavy!”

“It’s okay,” he said, walking on. I sighed and leaned my head against his shoulder. I didn’t feel like fighting. Gentle pressure against my temple, and he’d kissed me. “You’ll get over this,” I heard him say under his breath.

Orphaned at 7, with no memory of her past or the family she lost, 17 year old Skye Martin is tired of being alone and afraid. After a hard night of partying, Skye wakes up alone in an unfamiliar hotel. All she can remember is the deep voice of her rescuer and his promise: “I am safe.”

Xander has been tasked with watching Skye from afar for the past two years, in order to keep her safe from the demons that hunt her. An easy job - until a pair of red glowing eyes reveal themselves to Skye, and Xander, in a moment of weakness, is forced to break his cover to protect her. As she begins to unravel the truth about who Xander is and the details surrounding her family, she discovers that she might just be the key to saving everything... And, most importantly, she finds that there has always been someone by her side who would never let her fall…

My Review:
Never Let You Fall is the fantastic debut novel by Michele G. Miller. This story had so much variety. Do you like Fantasy? It has it. Do you like Paranormal? It has it. Do you like contemporary fiction or do you prefer a more simpler time? It has both. Adventure? It has that too. How about Forbidden Love? It definitely has that. The title is perfect, and I love the cute story behind it. Skye is relatable and lovable right from the start. Xander is irresistable. Through out the story, you are given perspectives from both of them which I really enjoyed. It was easy to get caught up in their lives. There is still so much to learn about the characters and what's going on within their world. They all have secrets. Most seem to have a hidden agenda. It's impossible to know who to trust. As you learn one secret (or think you have), it builds on to something bigger with even more secrets and mystery.  Never Let You Fall kept me wanting more and more.

Never Let You Fall by Michele G. Miller was provided to me by the author for review. The opinions are my own.

Guest Post by Michele G. Miller: Top 10 Romantic Quotes
What's beyond Forks?  I LOVE this blog name.  So many people were really re-awakened to the pleasure of reading by reading the Twilight series.  I assume that now that you're done with those fabulous books, and movies, you are seeking more awesomeness?
I hope to share a little awesome with you.  I was inspired today to share with you ten of the most romantic quotes from books I could think of or find.  I pulled one of my favorites from my own book, Never Let You Fall, for you too.  Here we go…

**Disclaimer- I put the book names in bold just in case you haven't read them yet you can see the name.  I tried to pick quotes that wouldn't spoil the stories and want to remind you that not all declarations of love are always what they seem ;)

1) "I love you right up to the moon - and back."  Sam McBratney's Guess How Much I Love You.  Yes this is a kid's book and it is full of so much sweet love.  I have read it to all three of my kiddos.

2) "In vain I have struggled. It will not do. My feelings will not be repressed. You must allow me to tell you how ardently I admire and love you." Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice.  Who can ever forget Darcy's proposal?

3) "Whatever our souls are made of, his and mine are the same." -Emily Brontë's Wuthering Heights.  Soul mates, le sigh.

4) “There is no pretending," Jace said with absolute clarity. "I love you, and I will love you until I die, and if there is life after that, I'll love you then.” Cassandra Clare's City of Glass.  Jace is such a jerk but this was a moment that made my little heart sing!  I actually love him and all his jerkiness.

5) "We loved with a love that was more than love." Edgar Allan Poe's Annabell Lee.  Love that transcends love?  That is deep.

6) “You are my sin and my redemption” Amy A Bartol's Inescapable.  Kill. Me. Now.  Ahhhh, Reed I love you.

7) "All, everything that I understand, I understand only because I love." -Leo Tolstoy's War and Peace.  Love makes the world go round people.

8) "I can't live in a world where you don't exist" Stephenie Meyer's New Moon

9) “I was more myself with you during those three days than I’ve ever been with anyone in my life. It’d be easier if I could be fake with you, but you bring out everything in me, little Ann. All of it.” Wendy Higgins' Sweet Peril.  I am completely head over heels for bad boy Kaiden Rowe.  Occasionally he shows his heart and soul and when he does it melts you.

About the Author:
Having grown up in both the cold, quiet town of Topsham, Maine and the steamy, southern hospitality of Mobile, Alabama, Michele is something of a enigma.  She is an avid Yankees fan, loves New England, being outdoors and misses snow.  However she thinks southern boys are hotter, Alabama football is the only REAL football out there and sweet tea is the best thing this side of heaven and her children’s laughter!

Her family, a doting husband and three awesome  minions, have planted their roots in the middle of Michele’s two childhood homes in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Never Let You Fall is Michele’s first novel and she is beyond thrilled to have finally followed up on a dream she has held for over 20 years!  God willing there will be many many more books to follow.
