The Blurb:
Seventeen-year-old Ava-Claire Sullivan isn't one for doing the expected. Especially when she finds out her mother's cancer is terminal. After a crying session in the local cemetery where she's attacked by one strange guy and saved by another, she doesn't call the cops. Because those guys definitely weren't your average hooligans.

And the one who sort-of saved her? Well, he's odd. He doesn't seem to breathe or smile or have anything better to do than wait in the cemetery for Ava to come back. Which she does. Call it morbid curiosity. Even after he warns her that he's dangerous, she can't stop wanting to see him, talk to him, be with him.

There's something about Peter that provides a much-needed escape from her mother's diagnosis and her tenuous relationship with her father. Even her best friends Jamie and Texas don't know what it's like to face death. But Peter does. He already has. He also made a promise a long time ago that could destroy both of them.

When everything in your life is falling apart, what are you willing to give up to hold onto the one thing that could last forever?

My Review:
Nocturnal is the first book in The Noctalis Chronicles by Chelsea M. Cameron. I could easily get lost in the Noctalis part of this world. I tried not to think about Ava's situation with her mom at home fighting cancer, but it was hard at times. I'm holding out hope for her still. Like Ava, I would be morbidly running off to cemeteries to escape too. I really enjoyed how the author took parts of already existing creatures and created her own creature. I'm looking forward to learning more about them as the series continues. Peter took a little while to grow on me as a love interest for Ava, but I like how you gradually get to know him throughout the story. He has this "blink" thing that is adorable.

The Deleted Scene:
This was from an early draft of Nocturnal, back when it was called Nightwings. I changed the timeline of the story, so this didn't fit anymore. It happened somewhere after the party where Tex meets Peter, and before she tells Tex what Peter is and takes place in the cemetery. It's a fun little exchange and I'm bummed that it didn't fit in the final story. ~Chelsea M. Cameron
“My friends are worried about me.”

“Have you told them about me?”

“Hell no. Well, I had to tell Tex about Ivan. And I sort of told her that I was hanging out with a guy.”

“How did she take it?” It was nice that he was so still sometimes. He didn't fidget or put his hands in his pockets or put his hands through his hair. The only downside was that it reminded me of how unhuman he was. And those little quirks were cute and endearing. The only thing I'd seen from him was turning his head to the side and the blink-shrug.

“Not very well, considering your brother tried to strangle me.”

“I am sorry for that. Do you think you can mend it?”

“Yeah, Tex and I have been through a lot. Besides, she was kinda drunk so I'm not sure how much she really remembers. But she saw the marks on my neck the next day.”

“May I see?”

I hadn't worn a scarf, just my hair down and around my shoulders. I pulled it back and moved my head forward so he could see. He reached out as if he was going to touch me, but then pulled back. Every move he made was so fluid that it was unusual to see him do something so jerky. I pulled my hair back down.

“Does it hurt?”

“Not so much. You can touch me if you want to prove it.”

“I would rather not.” Did that bother me? I wasn't sure.

“Okay.”

I sat watching the sun on his hair. It was so dark I could almost see blue lights in it. He looked up at the sun. No squinting.

“Did you guys, like, make up that whole vampires burn in the sun thing to fool people?”

“Perhaps. It may stem from the fact that we cannot be exposed to sunlight during the change.”

“Why?”

“I know not the mechanics of it. It is just what is done.” That was something to ponder. I had a lot of things to ponder. Enough for a lifetime.

“So you're telling me that those freaky guys in Speedos on the beach could be immortals? What about nudists?”

“Possibly.”

“Ew.” He laughed. This time I heard it. It was a deep sound that sent tingles down my spine. Like a roll of thunder.
“You laughed.” I felt the need to point it out.

“It is easier to laugh in the sun.”

“But there are always clouds,” I said as one covered the sun momentarily.

“Yes, there are always clouds.”

We sat there for a while, me watching him, him watching the sun. He was a lot better looking in the sun too. His eyes were startling. I couldn't decide with was prettier. The green was like fresh grass, and the blue was more like clear Caribbean water. They were focused on me. I'd been caught staring.

“Sorry.” I blushed and looked down at the grass, pulling some out. If I kept hanging out with him here, I was going to need to fertilize.

“You may study me. I do not mind.”

“It's embarrassing.”

“Why?”

“It's embarrassing to be staring at someone and have them catch you at it.”

“You may stare at me all you like.” He fixed me with those eyes and it was hard to look away. But I did. Them my stomach growled.

“Ugh, I'm sorry again.” Me and my human stomach.

“You need to eat.” He stood up. I scrambled to my feet.
