Release Day Review! Dating Makes Perfect by Pintip Dunn

Dating Makes Perfect by Pintip Dunn
Genre: Young Adult (Contemporary Romance)
Date Published: August 18, 2020
Publisher: Entangled: Teen

The Tech sisters don’t date in high school. Not because they’re not asked. Not because they’re not interested. Not even because no one can pronounce their long, Thai last name—hence the shortened, awkward moniker. But simply because they’re not allowed.

Until now.

In a move that other Asian American girls know all too well, six months after the older Tech twins got to college, their parents asked, “Why aren’t you engaged yet?” The sisters retaliated by vowing that they won’t marry for ten (maybe even twenty!) years, not until they’ve had lots of the dating practice that they didn’t get in high school.

In a shocking war on the status quo, her parents now insist that their youngest daughter, Orrawin (aka “Winnie”), must practice fake dating in high school. Under their watchful eyes, of course—and organized based on their favorite rom-coms. ’Cause that won’t end in disaster.

The first candidate? The son of their longtime friends, Mat Songsomboon—arrogant, infuriating, and way too good-looking. Winnie’s known him since they were toddlers throwing sticky rice balls at each other. And her parents love him.

If only he weren’t her sworn enemy.

Dating Makes Perfect by Pintip Dunn was a fun, little romcom story that reminded me of Lara Jean in To All the Boys I've Loved Before. I loved the fake dating and enemies to more theme, and the characters were believable and cute. Winnie's personality is absolutely adorable, and it was fun watching her grow into her own person as she figured out life. I love stories like this that pull me right back to high school, and even though I'm not familiar with Thai customs so much, that added an interesting aspect to the story as well. All in all, this was a super adorable story, and I'd definitely recommend it!

Release Day Review! Malice by Pintip Dunn

Malice by Pintip Dunn
Genre: Young Adult (Science Fiction / Romance)
Date Published: February 4, 2020
Publisher: Entangled: Teen

What I know: a boy in my school will one day wipe out two-thirds of the population with a virus.

What I don’t know: who he is.

In a race against the clock, I not only have to figure out his identity, but I’ll have to outwit a voice from the future telling me to kill him. Because I’m starting to realize no one is telling the truth. But how can I play chess with someone who already knows the outcome of my every move? Someone so filled with malice they’ve lost all hope in humanity? Well, I’ll just have to find a way—because now they’ve drawn a target on the only boy I’ve ever loved...

Malice by Pintip Dunn is a stand alone novel at the moment. I've seen rumors that this will be a series, but I don't have concrete information yet. This one is a keeper, folks. Sure, there are a couple plot holes and moments of unbelievability, but everything else more than makes up for it. Call me crazy, but the reasoning behind how they time traveled makes sense to me. I mean, some memories are so vivid, it really feels like you could travel back there. Anyway, I found that whole aspect to be pretty unique and interesting. If this does end up being a series, I'll be anxious to get my hands on that next book!

A streak of electricity zaps through my head.

My eyes pop open. What was that? I swear I felt my brain short-circuiting.

Cautiously, I glance around. A couple of my classmates are biting into fat, foil-wrapped burritos, and a girl with a feather tattoo is stretched on the lawn, using her girlfriend’s stomach as a pillow. A group of guys throw a basketball around on the court,

Not a single person looks at me. Clearly, no puff of smoke billows around my head.

Okay, then. I was probably just imagining it. Lack of sleep and too much fatigue from carving all those veggies. That combo’s enough to make anybody hallucinate.

Giving my head a firm shake, I start walking—

Zapppp.

My breath hitches.

The synapses inside my brain sizzle, as though they’re being held over an open fire. I grab my temples between my hands, but it doesn’t help. The pain intensifies, as though my brain is slowly being brought to a boil.

My vision blurs, and I lurch behind a tree, dropping to my knees. A muffled voice rumbles. I don’t pay attention. I have more pressing concerns, like keeping the brain inside my skull. The voice rumbles louder. FLAMING MONKEYS. Can’t you see a girl is dying here? Go. Away.

“Maybe I would if you would listen a moment,” the Voice snaps, much more clearly this time.

What? Disoriented, I look up. But there’s no one around other than a butterfly flitting by my head.

“I’m in here,” the Voice says, as though I’m a wayward two-year-old. “In your head.”

The pain dials back a notch, but my stomach is still swirling with nausea. A voice…in my head? No way. I’m hallucinating. I’ve got to be. The chicken tasted worse than normal—maybe I have food poisoning. Any second now, I’m going to vomit or pass out. Probably both.

“Focus,” the Voice barks. She sounds feminine, but I can’t tell if she’s young or old. “Do you want this pain to stop?”

The flames roar back, burning even hotter. This is the worst food poisoning ever. I’m never cooking again. “Yes!” I moan. “I’ll do anything. Just make it stop.”

The pain shuts off like a door being slammed, and I collapse against the tree trunk, panting.

“Good. I’ll go away, once and for all. You won’t have to deal with this pain anymore. You just have to do one thing for me.” She pauses, as though gathering her thoughts. “Tell Bandit that you love him.”

“Huh?” The electricity must’ve fried my hearing. “Who?”

“Bandit,” the Voice bites out. “You know. The Thai boy playing basketball across the field?”

Pushing myself off the tree, I peer around the trunk. Across the courtyard, a guy with electric-blue hair raises his hands to shoot the ball, and his shirt rides up, revealing nicely defined muscles.

“You’ve g-got to be kidding,” I sputter. “I don’t even know him! I’m not going to profess my love to some random guy.”

The Voice sighs. “Yes, actually. You are.”

Forget Tomorrow Teaser Blitz!

Forget Tomorrow by Pintip Dunn
Genre: Young Adult (Dystopian)
Date Published: November 3rd, 2015
Publisher: Entangled Teen

Imagine a world where your destiny has already been decided...by your future self. It's Callie’s seventeenth birthday and, like everyone else, she's eagerly awaiting her vision―a memory sent back in time to sculpt each citizen into the person they're meant to be. A world-class swimmer. A renowned scientist. Or in Callie's case, a criminal. In her vision, she sees herself murdering her gifted younger sister. Before she can process what it means, Callie is arrested and placed in Limbo―a hellish prison for those destined to break the law. With the help of her childhood crush, Logan, a boy she hasn’t spoken to in five years, she escapes. But on the run from her future, as well as the government, Callie sets in motion a chain of events that she hopes will change her fate. If not, she must figure out how to protect her sister from the biggest threat of all—Callie, herself.

“I can’t fight Fate. But I know who can. FuMA. I’m going to let them arrest me. Lock me up, so that I can’t fulfill my memory. Even if I want to.”
He stills. “But then you would be in detainment. For the rest of your life.”
You’ll never see the sun again, a voice inside me whispers. Never get married and have your own family. The inside of a cell will be your home for the rest of your days.
I don’t care. Tears drip onto my cheeks, and I swipe them away. This is my sister we’re talking about. My sister.
“I can’t imagine ever doing what my future self did.” I swallow hard. “But it happened. So I can’t guarantee I won’t change my mind.” I straighten my shoulders. “The safest thing for me to do is take the decision out of my hands. And FuMA’s offering to do just that.”
He closes the distance between us. “You can’t turn yourself in, Callie. Think about what you’re saying.”
“Both you and the Chairwoman said it—the hand of Fate is strong. I have to take extreme measures in order to defeat it. What can be more extreme than going to detainment?”
He opens his mouth, but before he can say anything, I twist away and look down the hill. “They’re coming.”
A fast-moving pack of bloodhounds drag along a blur of guards in navy and white uniforms. They’ve just begun their ascent, but the dogs are galloping up the slope, as if they can’t wait to rip me apart. I’ve got a minute, tops.
My hand closes around the black chip, and I pull it from my pocket. Without another thought, I throw it as hard as I can over the precipice. There. It’s gone. Just because I’m turning myself in doesn’t mean I have to tell them about Jessa. They don’t need any more reason to investigate her.
I turn back to Logan. His eyes pierce me with an expression of deep, unspeakable regret. Does he actually care? Underneath the years of silence and betrayal, does a kernel of friendship still remain?
“I’m sorry, Callie.”
There’s so much I want to say. I’m going away, for a very long time. This is my last chance to reconcile our old hurts. The last time to feel a real, human connection.
My last chance for a kiss. Oh, how I want to lean forward and press my lips against his. I don’t want to die having never kissed a boy.
But there’s no time. The dogs’ barks shatter the air like the rat-tat-tat of a machine gun. We hear the scuffle of feet against dirt. The officers will be on top of us at any moment.
“Go!” I shout at Logan. “Get out of here, before they
arrest you, too.”
He opens his mouth to say something, but I shake my head. “Don’t. Don’t make this any harder than it is.”
With his eyebrows pulled together, Logan nods, gives my arm one last squeeze, and disappears over the other side of the hill.
This is it. My last few moments of freedom.
Turning, I raise my hands in surrender. I take a deep breath, savoring the openness of the mountain air. And then I walk straight toward the officers.
