Release Day Review! Bloom by Nikki Rae

Bloom (The Order, #1) by Nikki Rae
Genre: Adult Fiction (Dark Romance/Erotica)
Expected Release Date: February 28, 2018
Publisher: Self

Given to The Grimm Order as an infant, Fawn was raised in a world shaped by the rich and powerful. When she was sold at the age of nine to a Suitor, Fawn believed he would protect her from the “Mainworld”, where those who know nothing about the Order live. Living with the cruel man who bought her freedom, she finds just what the Order is about: money, control, and status for the Owner and humiliation and abuse for those they own.

Unwilling to accept the expectations of being Owned, Fawn goes from golden girl to maid, content to live in the shadows of the Order as long as she isn’t Owned again.

It’s been ten years since she disgraced her former Owner’s name, and now the brooding Frenchman Elliot Lyon wants her. Master Lyon is kind, smart, and unlike any man she’s met. She doesn’t want to admit it to herself, but Fawn is drawn to him despite constantly planning her next escape.

Even the prettiest flowers have thorns, and Master Lyon is hiding secrets that will uproot everything she thinks she knows about him.

Bloom is the first book in The Order series by Nikki Rae. You can always count on something out of the box with this author, and that's one of the things I love about her stories. Fawn's world is pretty much a nightmare, literally. She isn't free. I'm not sure yet how the "outside world" is within this story, but I get the impression it's pretty much like our world. Then you have people like Fawn who are sold or stolen into the Order, much like, if not just like human trafficking. The rich and elite within the Order buy these children and young adults and do pretty much whatever they want to with them. Fawn's new owner seems different in many ways. He lost my loyalty pretty early on, but as I learned more about him, I found out the reasons behind his actions. I still don't excuse him. Fawn fights her feelings. She knows better, and the girl has some inner strength, let me tell you! She has to. It's how you survive in her world. These characters are complex, complicated, and feel so alive... it's easy to forget you're reading a book.

The ARC of Bloom by Nikki Rae was kindly provided to me by the author for review. The opinions are my own.

“Fawn,” he said suddenly, his voice soft but still making me jump in my seat. “Were they out of flower names?” he asked, a smile in his voice.

He let on that he knew about the inner-workings of the actual Compound more than my last Owner. Then again, my last one only cared about one thing. He didn't play these mind games this guy seemed to like.

Master Lyon sighed, convinced I wouldn't answer, but for some reason I couldn't keep my mouth shut.

“I was one of the originals at the California Compound.” I hesitated almost too long before I brought my eyes back to his face. He was staring, waiting for me to say more. “We all had animal names,” I said, trying and failing to hide the disgust in my voice.

“Fawn,” he said. “With those eyes?”

I blinked, wondering what he meant.

“They’re so large and expressive,” he explained. “You’re more of a Doe to me.”

So this would be my new name? Not Dog or Whore, but Doe?

He smiled like I’d said something funny but I wasn't joking. “Do you not like it?”

I didn't know why he cared if I did or did not like something. It shouldn't matter to him. I didn't like any of this and it was obvious. He was asking to toy with me, get me to talk. I was done talking. I bit the inside of my cheek to keep the words from spilling out.

Check out my review of the next book in this series!

My teaser this week is from REN: Reposed by Brittany Quagan

“You’re sorry?!” I lowered my voice to a grumble. “She’s sorry.  I just got burned at the stake. AGAIN. But, she’s sorry. So, no big deal.”

“Actually, last time you were hung,” Gage mumbled.

Sometimes I wanted to whap him with a shoe. This was one of those times.

“The point here is more about the dying, Gage, but thanks for your commitment to details.”

From foster kid to awkward teen, Ren Nagel has always wanted to be "normal." But, that's probably never going to happen. Ren is just a little more than human––she's an Implement sent to Earth to save the world. She knows what she's supposed to be doing, but for now, Ren is ignoring all the signs.

Bound by promises made a very long time ago, and with the help of her friends––some human, some not––Ren reluctantly sets out on an adventure that, if it doesn't kill her, will change her life––and everyone else's.

There are other Implements out there whose help she needs to keep humanity from destroying itself, but first she's got to find them. And then, she's got a few debts to pay with her old friend Karma ...

Romance is in the Air! Jessica & James: A Love Story by Kimberley Montpetit

Jessica & James: A Love Story by Kimberley Montpetit
Genre: Adult Fiction (Contemporary Romance)
Date Published: December 17, 2017
Publisher: Self

A feisty ballerina with a broken heart. A minister-in-training whose faith can work miracles. Can two strong-willed people find true love and a match made in heaven?

Jessica & James: A Love Story is a boxed collection of two romances set in Snow Valley, Montana—the saga of rising star ballerina Jessica and the sparks that fly between her and gorgeous James Douglas, the new pastor in town.

This collection includes new chapters, and a Brand New Bonus Wedding novella!

Suffering with a broken heart, Jessica has struggled to forgive herself for that fateful night when her childhood love was killed in a car accident. After staying away from home for years, she finally returns for Christmas and meets James Douglas who is unlike any minister-in-training she’s ever known. James can not only dish back Jessica’s finely tuned sarcasm but understands grief all too well, turning Jessica’s world and her faith upside down. Is she ready to take another risk on love?

Living 2,000 miles apart proves difficult and Jessica and James’ love is tested in a myriad of ways, but James can’t get the spitfire Jessica out of his mind. When she comes home to Snow Valley to accept an inheritance with her male ballet partner in tow, James and Jessica’s passion for each other takes on a new edge.

Clean romance with heart, and a surprise wedding you won’t see coming.

It was only a small-town Christmas talent show, but Jessica tried to become the Sugar Plum Fairy and dance as well as she did for her job at the New Orleans ballet company. Lighter, lighter, float through the air, she repeated in her mind when the final leaps and spinning began. She was almost finished. The performance had been flawless. Jessica could go home knowing she’d done her best for her old ballet teacher and the people of Snow Valley.
Then she spotted him, and her heart stopped inside her chest. He was sitting in the audience. Right in front of her parents, sister, and younger brother, Sam.
The man. From the cemetery. James Douglas.
A tiny whimper sounded in Jessica’s throat.
Second row, stage right, crisp white shirt, suit coat, red tie, one leg crossed over his knee while the other stuck out into the aisle seat due to their long length.
No, it couldn’t be that same guy. He was too uptight, too perfect and suave and—and crisp in his starched white shirt. He wasn’t the type to come to a ballet, was he? In Snow Valley of all places. Maybe it was someone who just looked like him. But this dude was staring at Jessica. Intensely staring. She stared back, shocked, wondering if she was seeing things, but the stage lights were too bright, blinding her.
The Sugar Plum Fairy crown began to slide off her head. Her left leg that was supposed to bow in the concluding move of the dance stiffened up from the raw Montana December day. It probably hadn’t been the wisest decision to sit in a snowy cemetery earlier that afternoon.
That man watching her leaned forward in his chair and gazed at her in such a mesmerized stance, that the auditorium whirled around her in a frenzy of faces and self-consciousness.
Jessica crashed to the stage, falling into an ungraceful heap, her ankle burning as if she’d broken it. There went her ballet career. All because of some guy’s gorgeous crystal blue eyes.

Reese finds she will have to choose between two men and two times.

Suddenly hurtled into Victorian England, he has the chance to woo Reese again. But to do it, he’ll have to fight the magic that brought her to 1850 and an Earl with the means to keep her there.

“I don’t usually like time travel novels but the humor, banter and the attraction kept me enthralled. A great love story with a little history lesson, a happy ending and a hook.” ~K.B.

“A magical read” ~Jennifer Soppe

“And where might you be going, Miss Hamilton?” The Earl surveyed the items stacked behind her.

“To your tenant village, my lord.” When his gaze darted to hers, she arched a brow, daring him to stop her.

“My tenants are none of your business.” His voice had turned hard, unrelenting.

“One visit there showed me they have been none of your business either,” she said sharply before remembering he could stop her efforts right now. “My lord.”

The Earl shot her another of his hard glances. “I shall accompany you then.” He waved to the groom. “In the back.” When the young man had vacated the seat beside her, Gareth took his place. He snapped the whip and the horse surged forward. “I have not visited there in years.”

“That was obvious,” Reese muttered. “Do you have someone handle the management of your estate for you?”

“Yes.” He glanced at her from the corner of his eye. “My man of business.”

“You might want to consider hiring a new one then,” she said, “because I’m underwhelmed.”

“Underwhelmed,” the Earl repeated. “I don’t believe I have heard that word before. Is it something you Americans invented?”

“Yankee ingenuity,” she said.

“Yankee arrogance, I would say.”

“Americans don’t have a monopoly on arrogance.” Reese kept her face forward.

Release Day Review! Smooth-Talking Cowboy by Maisey Yates

Smooth-Talking Cowboy (Gold Valley #1) by Maisey Yates
Genre: Adult Fiction (Contemporary Romance)
Date Published: February 20, 2018
Publisher: HQN Books

Welcome to Gold Valley, Oregon, where a rough-and-tumble rancher and the girl next door are about to learn that opposites attract.

Olivia Logan has a plan: win back her ex by making him see what he’s missing. But first she needs to find a man who’s willing to play along. With his laid-back cowboy charm and knack for getting under her skin, Luke Hollister is an unlikely hero—but he wants her help convincing her father to sell him land, which means he needs her as much as she needs him.

Luke likes his life—and his women—uncomplicated. So why does good girl Olivia heat his blood like no one else? She’s always been off-limits, but the more time they spend as Gold Valley’s hottest new “couple,” the more real it’s starting to feel. Luke was supposed to help her win back another man…not keep her in his arms. But now that he has her there, he’s not sure he’ll ever let go.

Smooth-Talking Cowboy is the first book in the Gold Valley series by Maisey Yates. Olivia and Luke are quite the unlikely pairing. They've known each other a long time, but they are complete opposites. Luke is the town player, and Olivia is the town golden child. They don't particularly like each other either, but once they start spending time with each other, the sparks start to fly... even though they're both in denial about it. It's just a fling! This was a fun story, and Luke was far more complex than I thought he would be. I enjoyed both characters, and they're story was cute and steamy.

The ARC of Smooth-Talking Cowboy by Maisey Yates was kindly provided to me by InkSlinger PR for review. The opinions are my own.

Oh well. She needed rescuing. Even if it was by Luke Hollister. She moved closer to the road, crossing her arms and standing there, looking pathetic. At least, she had a feeling she looked somewhat pathetic. She felt pathetic.
Luke would stop, because despite being a scoundrel, a womanizer, he had that innate sense of chivalry that cowboys tended to possess. All yes ma’am and opening doors and saving damsels from the railroad tracks.
Or the side of the road, in this case.
The truck came closer, and she registered the exact moment Luke saw her. Felt it, somehow. She took a step back, making room for him to pull off and up next to her car. His truck kept going.
She stared after him. “He didn’t stop!”
She had been incredibly peeved that Luke Hollister had been the salvation she hadn’t wanted, but she was even more peeved that he had declined his opportunity to be said salvation.
Then she saw brake lights, followed by reverse lights.
Slowly, the truck backed up, easing its way up beside her.
Luke leaned across the seat, working the crank window so that it was partway down. He had a black cowboy hat on, covering most of his dark blond hair, his green eyes glittering with humor beneath the wide brim. And then he smiled. That slow, lazy smile of his that always made her feel like he had spoken an obscenity.
“Olivia Logan, as I live and breathe. You seem to have gotten yourself in a bit of trouble.”
“I didn’t get myself into any trouble,” she said crisply. “There was a nail in the road, and I now seem to have a flat tire.” He just looked at her, maddeningly calm. “You weren’t going to stop,” she added, knowing she sounded accusing.
“I thought better of it. I’d hate it if you were eaten by wolves.”
“There are no wolves here,” she said, feeling impatient.
“They recently tracked one that came down from Washington. Just one though, so probably the worst that would happen is you’d get gnawed on, rather than eaten in your entirety.”
“Well. I’m glad you decided to help me avoid a vicious gnawing,” she said grumpily.
“I could change the tire for you,” he said.
“Do you want to pull off the road before we have this discussion?” she asked.
He looked in his rearview mirror, then glanced back at her. “There’s no one coming. It’s not exactly rush hour.”
“There is no rush hour in Gold Valley.”
But that didn’t mean someone wouldn’t be pulling up behind him on the narrow two-lane road soon enough.
He still didn’t move his truck, though.
“Luke,” she said, “I need to go to work.”
“Well, why didn’t you say so? Do you have a spare tire?”
“Yes,” she said impatiently.
“I’ll tell you what. I’ll drive you down to work, and then when I head back this way I’ll fix your tire.”
