Book Review: Haunting Secrets by Marie Higgins

Haunting Secrets by Marie Higgins
Genre: Adult Fiction (Paranormal Romance/Fractured Fairy Tale)
Date Published: November 10, 2014
Publisher: Canyonland Press

Victoria Fawson desperately needs answers about her father’s death. When she visits the Maitland Manor to discover those answers, she finds only secrets…haunting secrets that leave her wondering who she can trust. Should she trust her feelings for the one man who hides from the world—the man who might put her in danger?

Justin Maitland hasn’t been human for over a year. He knows things about his family—things that could destroy Victoria. The only way to help her is to send her back home without learning anything. Yet, how can he let her go when he’s given her his heart?

Haunting Secrets by Marie Higgins is another re-telling of Beauty and the Beast. I don't know what my deal is these days, but I can't get enough of theses fairy tale retellings.. Beauty and the Beast in particular. This book was previously published as "Secrets After Dark". I haven't read that version, but from what I understand the only difference is the character names.

The story is told from Victoria and Justin's point of view. I thought their relationship was cute. I would think more members of his family would have gotten cursed, based on certain behaviors but who knows. There were twists and turns within the plot that kept me wondering. I really liked the mystery surrounding the whole thing. You knew something was not quite right with certain characters, but until it's all out in the open you never quite know what that something is.

author
Since Marie Higgins was a little girl playing Barbies with her sister, Stacey, she has loved the adventure of making up romantic stories. Marie was only eighteen years old when she wrote her first skit, which won an award for Funniest Skit. A little later in life, after she’d married and had children, Marie wrote Church roadshows that were judged as Funniest and Best Written. From there, she branched out to write full-length novels based on her dreams. (Yes, she says, her dreams really are that silly)

Marie has been married for twenty-six years to a wonderful man. Together, they have three loving daughters and several beautiful grandchildren. Marie works full time for the state of Utah, where she has lived her entire life. Marie plans to keep writing, because the characters in her head won’t shut up. But her husband smiles and pretends this is normal. Check out my interview with the author of take My Heart, Marie Higgins!!
