Saving Mars Book Tour! A Guest Post with Cidney Swanson!!

Thank you for stopping by our blog today along the Saving Mars Blog Tour! We are excited to have Cidney Swanson at the blog today. She's going to talk to us about something all her fans have been wondering... Why Mars?

If you haven't read Saving Mars yet, here's a little blurb to wet your whistle:
When starvation threatens the human colony on Mars, 17-year-old Jessamyn, a pilot whose been grounded, must prove that she and her autistic brother have the right stuff to raid Earth for food.
A Guest Post by Cidney Swanson: Why Mars?
I’m often asked why I chose to write a book set on Mars, of all places, especially since my other series, The Ripple Trilogy, seemed a bit more paranormal romance. Career-and-finance-wise, it probably would have made more sense to do a spin-off on some of the other characters from the Ripple world.

But here’s the thing. I geek on space. I have since I was little. There’s just something about an inky black sky scattered with diamond dust. Also, I’ve been fascinated by Mars since, oh, forever. It’s the planet closest to us and it has so many things in common with Earth that other planets circling the Sun don’t have. (An atmosphere, gravity that won’t kill you, north and south poles, a nearly-twenty-four-hour day, and so on.)

I used to imagine what it would be like to be a girl growing up on Mars. I tried to find books about girls on Mars, but, alas, most books set on Mars feature male heroes. So I’ve always known I wanted to write a story about a girl on Mars. And then Jessamyn shows up in my head one day. She loves two things: reading and flying fast, fast, fast. For a long time, those were the only things I knew about her.

But eventually a story grew around Jess: a story where her world is slowly starving and she has to convince her government that she and her autistic brother have the right stuff to make a daring flight to Earth to raid for food. And, boy, are they in for a few surprises—and a lot of heartache—when they reach Earth. (Um, spoiler alert? My bad.) So check out the sample on Amazon—you might just fall a little in love with Mars, too!

Cidney Swanson is a full-time writer of Young Adult Sci-Fi and Fantasy including The Rippler Trilogy and The Saving Mars Series. SAVING MARS was named to Kirkus Reviews’ Best of 2012. Cidney is fond of saying that for her, “Every Day is NaNoWriMo!” When not writing, she’s easily distracted by shiny things such as books with raised foil on the covers, cleverly packaged bars of chocolate, or stars set against an inky night sky. She lives in rainy Eugene, Oregon with her family.
