Kim is a dark fiction writer with the heart of a poet and the soul of a gypsy while the ancient rhythms of Africa, the birthplace of storytellers, courses through her veins. Wanting to be either a pathologist or a criminal psychologist, life took her on a few twists and turns while studying journalism and after a couple of meandering offshoots that did not involve fiction, fiction finally chose her when she was asked to write a short story for a NZ anthology (which was a National Award Winner). Kim now lives on the beautiful East Coast of New Zealand’s North Island and is lucky enough to call the Pacific Ocean her backyard. She can often be found wandering the cliff tops above the crashing ocean and walking through the lush farmlands that surround the area. But with a heart caught between two lands, the sunburned, ancient Africa and the lush, green islands of New Zealand, she finds her true home within the white pages covered in ink. Her fiction is caught between the dark and mysterious, the truth and the what ifs, secrets and reality, shadows and light. Kim really does see ghosts and her loved ones believe ghosts and extreme weather phenomenon follow her around. She grew up spending holidays and weekends at her grandparents’ large old farm homestead which had a hidden wing that was haunted. These early experiences with haunted homes ignited her imagination and started a spark that made her question what else is out there that we couldn’t see, what is around us observing us? Why could she see these ghosts/spirits and many others couldn’t? The spark was lit and the stories started coming as fast as she could write them down. One of these real life experiences sparked The Redgates Secrets, Kim’s debut 6 part novella series.

Book Blitz! The Crescent Chronicles Series by Alyssa Rose Ivy

Genre: New Adult (Paranorma Romance)
Date Published: August 15, 2012
Publisher: Self

The Blurb:
A summer in New Orleans is exactly what Allie needs before starting college. Accepting her dad’s invitation to work at his hotel offers an escape from her ex-boyfriend and the chance to spend the summer with her best friend. Meeting a guy is the last thing on her mind—until she sees Levi.

Unable to resist the infuriating yet alluring Levi, Allie finds herself at the center of a supernatural society and forced to decide between following the path she has always trusted or saving a city that might just save her.

The Excerpt:

Closing my eyes, I tried to block it all out. Convinced I was about to die, I was only partly aware of his arms around me.

“You said you wanted an adventure,” he said quietly, teasingly, as he tightened his hold.

My stomach dropped out as an intense and complete feeling of weightlessness engulfed me. The wind stung my face as memories flooded my mind. I thought of my parents, of all the things I wanted to tell them but never did, my friends from home, and the experiences I longed for. Quickly my thoughts changed to more recent memories, to Levi.

“Open your eyes,” he whispered, somehow knowing my eyes were clenched shut.

Against my better judgment, I listened. The scream died in my throat as we hurtled toward the
water that had seemed so beautiful from the roof above.

Chosen Release Day Blitz!

Genre: Young Adult (Fantasy Romance)
Date Published: January 29, 2013
Publisher: Self

The Blurb:
The essence of who we are lies not in what we have, but in what we are willing to give up.  Because in the end, Time and Tide wait for no one.

After sacrificing all that she had, the evil princess of the Underworld is still successful in her bid to tear Finn from Stasia’s life.  In the midst of her search to reclaim him, Stasia is summoned to the island nation of Cyprus to take part in an age-old ritual; unveiling the missing pieces of her ancestry and re-igniting an ancient war.  As she struggles to both save Finn’s soul and free Carmen’s mind, Stasia’s bravery and determination will be pushed to its breaking point.  A dark storm is forming on the horizon, and the forces who are vying to destroy her may be much closer than she thinks.  Destiny weaves a sticky web of evil, betrayal, and revenge that can only be undone by the purity of love and the soul’s unyielding will to survive.  In the last installment of the Daughters of the Sea trilogy, the past will collide with the present as Stasia’s future hangs in the balance.  The prophecy that paved the way for her new life may indeed be the very thing that strips her of the ones she loves the most.

Prologue:

A crisp, biting wind swirled through the open window; lifting the thin sheet draped over his aching body.  The night surrounding his isolated room was dark and still when the roar of the ocean’s waves was interrupted by an entrancing melody.  The full moon shone into his tired eyes as they cracked open at the faint singing; its silver glow pulling at his conscious.  He wrapped the tattered sheet around his body and slowly made his way to the window.  The night sky above glittered with the dancing of stars, while the radiance of the moon highlighted the rolling waves below.
The bubbling surf raced up the beach until its energy was spent; tugging on the sand and rocks below as it retreated once again.  The cool breeze swept through his white beard as he squinted his eyes at the beach below.  With each fallen wave, the glow became brighter.  Hundreds of magnificent blue lights sparkled within the water, creating a magical blanket of effervescence along the water’s edge.  He had only seen this phenomenon once before.  Many, many years ago.  It was a type of plankton that glistened a beaming blue when it became stirred up; however, he knew that it was typically found farther out in the ocean. Its unexpected arrival on land had his suddenly guarded eyes scanning the beach.  That’s when he saw her.
The sheer white fabric of her flowing dress drifted in the breeze as she glided in a wide circle, dancing and spinning with a power he could feel down in the core of his tired soul.  She was spellbinding and beautiful.  And deadly.  The captivating symphony of her voice cascaded down the stone walls of his prison and whirled around the crescent shaped beach below.  Her wild, curly dark hair was accentuated by streaks of silver as it blew around her pale face.  Eyes closed, her skin shimmered silver in the light of the moon above while she continued her trancelike dance.  Loose silver ribbons lifted from her wrists, ankles, and hair where they were loosely secured.  They created an illusion of fire; its sparkling flames shooting up into the air and around its writhing center.  He shook his head and closed his eyes to snap himself out of her allure.
As the singing faded slightly, he looked on as she stopped twirling and raised her thin arms into the air with closed fists.  She tilted her head back; her dark hair falling down her back, her body now fully embraced by the moonlight.  She herself emanated an eerie glow.  She wasn’t just dancing amongst the night; she was a part of the night.  The moonlight that caressed her angelic face also shone from within.  She stood perfectly still for what seemed like hours, while the ever moving world around her continued on its pace.  Finally, she slowly dropped her arms and flashed open her palms.  What appeared to be small crystals scattered around her onto the sand.  They shimmered and flickered as they brightened further.
She raised her arms again very slowly, making the circle of crystals hover in the air around her.  As they began to spin, they took on the appearance of a solid ring of light.  Her arms continued to lift, taking the ring of light higher and higher.  A bright flash caught him by surprise and he stumbled backwards; shielding his face.  After regaining his balance, he approached the window once more; only to see the ring of light had disappeared as well as the glowing plankton.  All that remained was her.
She stood rigid and silent as the surf swept over her feet and rushed back toward the waves. She began to sway gently from side to side and he realized how innocent she looked.  Her small stature was a reminder of who she used to be, but he knew better.  He knew what she was capable of.  In a flash, she twisted her head; locking him in her chilling glare.  The startling silver of her eyes chilled him to the bone and had him slowly backing away from the window.  Amongst the dark shadows of his room, he stared at the long ray of light cast across the floor by the moon.  He knew what her witching hour display meant.  He knew it with certainty.  A creeping cold slithered up his spine and squeezed his heart.  They were running out of time.

About the Author:
Kristen Day is a southern belle at heart with a crazy streak that desperately tries to escape at every opportunity.  She loves all things nostalgic, rustic, and quirky.  She’s been told she sees the world through rose-colored glasses, but she prefers to think of them as kaleidoscope glasses – swirling and morphing reality into something she can digest (who hasn’t pretended those pasty lima beans were really kiwi strawberry jelly beans?).

She is the author of the DAUGHTERS OF THE SEA trilogy, which includes FORSAKEN, AWAKEN (Oct 2012), and CHOSEN (Winter 2012).  She loves all books, but really enjoys writing young adult, paranormal romances.  She’s loved to write for as long as she can remember.  Her first published work was her poem RED in second grade (you guessed it – it was a poem about the color red – life altering, right?) that won her 5 gold stars and a spot in her elementary school’s poetry book. That’s when her addiction to the written word officially began.  She was the only kid in fifth grade that actually enjoyed diagramming sentences. Go ahead and laugh – its okay.

When she’s not writing she’s making jewelry, painting, feeding her addiction to sweet tea, watching the Discovery Channel, or going on random adventures in the mountains of North Carolina with her amazing husband. She was born in Boone, NC and graduated from Appalachian State University with a degree in Marketing in 2001.

I'll be honest--I wasn't planning to write a book like Leopard Moon. I had an entirely different story in my head at the time, but it just wasn't coming into clear focus. That's the funny way writing works though: there I am, sitting at a red light on my way to meet my friends for a birthday martini and pedicure, listening to Florence + the Machine and WHAM! The song Howl comes on and this whole lovely scene just starts unfolding in my head. There was Kess, running through the woods, ripping off of her clothes as she triggered a change into a black leopard. And there was Cormac, standing in a different part of the woods being beaten mercilessly by the villain. I didn't know Sek was going to turn out to be Kess' brother, but I did know who he was as a character and what he wanted.

It was truly a gift: the entire final fight scene just unspooled itself along with the song lyrics. Each beat of the song matched a key point in the fight. The more I listened, the more I realized that the lyrics could apply to all of the characters in the main triangle at some point in the story I suddenly wanted to tell. And I wanted that story to be more than just boy meeting girl--I wanted that story to be about girl saving boy, but more importantly about girl saving herself. The song Howl gave me Kess first and Sekhmet second, so a lot of what I tried to do with them was to show them as two halves of a whole, two sides of a coin. Howl, at least to me, wasn't a love song at all--it was a song about possession and obsession and all of those things that show up in our animal drives. that we'd like to forget exists.

So when I began to craft Kess and Sek, Howl played on a continuous loop. And though the song speaks of wolves, I knew these two had to be cats. Wolves have a more social nature and are more easily understood by us--I think it comes from them being a a precursor to our beloved dogs. Cats are an unknown quantity, strange and separate, even if they choose to share space with us. I wanted real darkness there, not just a brief bit of danger that would be easily resolved. Obsession and mental illness gave Sek that scariness, but also--I hope--a bit of sympathy. He really does love his sister and wants what is best for her and his clan. I never intended to excuse his behavior, but I did want to try and understand it.

Just like the song made me understand that narrator of that story. I can only hope I did half so well.

About the Author:
Jeanette Battista graduated with an English degree with a concentration in medieval literature which explains her possibly unhealthy fixation on edged weapons and cathedral architecture. She spent a summer in England and Scotland studying the historical King Arthur, which did nothing to curb her obsession. To satisfy her adrenaline cravings—since sword fighting is not widely accepted in these modern times—she rode a motorcycle at ridiculously high speeds, got some tattoos, and took kickboxing and boxing classes. She gave up the bike when her daughter came along, although she still gets pummeled at the gym on a regular basis.

When she’s not writing or working, Jeanette spends time with family, hikes, reads, makes decadent brownies, buys killer boots, and plays Pocket Frogs. She wishes there were more hours in the day so she could actually do more of these things. She lives with her daughter and their ancient, ill-tempered cat in North Carolina.

Book Review: Madman Dreams (Book One: Reanimated) by Keith A. Ferstl

Genre: Young Adult (Science Fiction)
Date Published: June 1, 2010
Publisher: The Edge

The Blurb:
After suffering the loss of his family from an avian flu pandemic, seventeen-year-old Jonathan Chaulk, meets McKenna Dupree, the girl of his dreams. Living in a remote cabin on Bear Claw Island, Jonathan’s sole neighbor is the mysterious Phoenix Institute. With the heart and soul of an intrepid adventurer, Jonathan’s surreptitious exploration of the Institute’s underbelly reveals shocking and deadly secrets that renowned resident scientist, Dr. Sandor Serpa cannot allow to be exposed. Thanks to the murderous act of the madman, Jonathan discovers that his one chance to save McKenna’s life will come only after her death.

My Review:
Reanimated is book one in the Madman Dreams series by Keith A. Ferstl. This was definitely an original story, and not at all what I expected. The beginning was slow for me. I had a hard time staying focused, but once the action started, it didn't stop. To say the second half was fast paced would be an understatement. Things just kept happening and before I knew it I had finished the book. The main character it endearing and really grows as a character as the story progresses. He starts off as a this loner boy who's had a rough, sad life and he matures into this strong, brave man. I really liked him. McKenna takes a little getting used to. She's a spunky girl who grows on you. She keeps drawing the short straw in this story, the poor thing. This was a clever little story, and once it got going, I couldn't turn the pages fast enough.

Madman Dreams (Book One: Reanimated) by Keith A. Ferstl  was provided to me by the author for review. The opinions are my own.

The Excerpt:
The arctic air that churned down across the Canadian border bit into Jonathan’s face. The cold wind exhilarated him. McKenna, snuggled in the cockpit beside him, shouted with excitement as the Raven flew across the ice. They’d been crisscrossing the lake for almost two hours when they spotted what appeared to be a naked man stumbling toward them. Jonathan jerked his head up and yelled a warning, but the man didn’t hear or chose to ignore him. He swiftly steered the iceboat into the wind. The sails flapped like sheets on a clothesline as the boat skidded to a stop. They scrambled to the crumpled figure and watched helplessly as he collapsed and curled into a fetal position.

Jonathan yanked off his parka and draped it over the man’s exposed body. He dropped to his knees beside him, pulled off his glove and pressed his fingertips to the man’s neck, searching for a pulse. McKenna knelt next to them. “Is he alive?”

He pushed the panic down. “I can’t get a pulse!” He tried to roll the body over to begin CPR, but the man’s contorted muscles refused to relax.

McKenna suddenly pointed toward the island. “Someone’s coming.”

Looking up from the body, he saw a black Land Rover heading in their direction. Was it from the Institute? He didn’t have time to dwell on the questions that popped into his head. Were they watching us? Were we under surveillance? Is that why they were so quick to respond? Or had they been pursuing the man? Right now he didn’t care about the “why” surrounding the

cavalry’s arrival. He only hoped the rescuers reached the man in time. He forced himself to look at the man’s face, twisted upward, eyebrows and eyelashes coated with a thick layer of ice crystals, bloodshot eyes frozen open, lips a dark blue.

The vehicle’s wide tires crunched to a stop a few feet away from them. Two figures, wearing orange hazmat suits, exited the vehicle. McKenna’s gasp mimicked his own.

The taller of the two orange suits handed each of them a black rubber mask. A clear plastic hose connected it to a stainless steel canister. “Put these on, and step away from the body! Do it now,” he ordered, “or you’re dead.”

Tour! A Book Review of Unmaking Hunter Kennedy by Anne Eliot

Genre: Young Adult (Contemporary Romance)
Date Published: October 17, 2012
Publisher: Butterfly Books, LLC

The Blurb:
After a car accident--an event he considers a prank gone bad--pop star, Hunter Kennedy is forced to hide out with his aunt in small-town Colorado. He’s supposed to rest, heal his scars and attend high school in disguise until the press dies down. But he only wants to get back to work.

Worse, the girl who’s been assigned to make him over into a geek is a major geek herself. Vere Roth is a chattering pixie, a blushing tornado and a complete social disaster. He’s never met a girl who’s never-been-kissed, believes in romance and thinks Hunter’s a 'nice' guy.

Funny thing is...Hunter is nice around Vere because she’s his first real friend. He also can’t seem to stop sharing his secrets or keep her out of his heart. Knowing he’d never deserve a girl as sweet as Vere, he resigns himself to the friend zone, and helps his new bestie with her own makeover.

She tortures him daily for ridiculous guy advice on how to snag her life-long crush. A guy Hunter thinks is totally wrong for Vere, and sadly, one who has taken note of Vere’s transformation.

When Vere asks her best friend for some kissing advice, Hunter can’t resist...

And that’s when things get out of control...

High School Romance, first love, sweet romance.

My Review:
Unmaking Hunter Kennedy is the first book I've read by Ann Eliot, and I'm definitely not disappointed. I loved high school, and this book took me back to those days. Vere is a little bit of a nerd, and definitely had her quirks. Hunter was the ultimate dream guy. He had the bad boy thing going on, he's famous, has a good sense of humor...Yeah, he had it all. Needless to say, the two were opposites, but they worked. And they were so darn cute together. The book wasn't all light and fluffy. There were serious themes woven in such as, depression and suicide. All in all, this was a super fun book to read. It was the ultimate high school fantasy and just plain fun to read. I think this is a great book for all audiences to enjoy.

Unmaking Hunter Kennedy by Anne Eliot was provided to me by the author for review. The opinions are my own.

An Interview with Samantha Durante Plus an ebook Giveaway of Stitch!

We are happy to have Samantha Durante, author of The Stitch Trilogy, on the blog today! She's also offered an ebook of Stitch up for grabs. Details later in the post, but first let's chit chat with Samantha!

authorHow long have you been writing?
Thanks so much for hosting me, Gabby! I’ve been writing ever since I can remember, but I’ve only been writing professionally (read: someone pays me for it!) for about two years (as a business writer), and Stitch is my first foray into the world of novels.

What inspired you to write your first book?

A love of reading – what else? :-) I finally got to a point in my life where I had some free time, so I decided to use that time to try writing fiction, since that’s what I love to read. (And now since I started doing the book thing, I no longer have any free time!)

When you first started writing Stitch, did you plan for it to be a trilogy?

Yup! When I thought of the idea, I immediately knew that there was too much backstory to fit into one book, and I always love reading multi-book series anyway since you can really lose yourself in them, so that’s what I decided to shoot for with Stitch.

Which of your characters do you relate to most and why?
There’s a little bit of me in each of my characters, but Alessa is probably the most like me. I’d like to be more cheery and fun like Janie, but if you ask anyone who knows me well, they would certainly NOT use the word “bubbly” to describe me, haha.

What is a secret about you that nobody else knows?
I’m a self-loathing meat-eater. I love animals and hate to think of any creature dying just to suit my appetite… but I also can’t imagine living without bacon or braised beef short ribs or chicken quesadillas. Plus, I recently developed a bean allergy, which makes it more difficult than ever to cut meat out of my diet, since beans were my go-to vegetarian protein… So for now, I just try to only eat meat when I really want it and only buy meat from small farmers who raise animals humanely. But I hate myself for it anyway. :’-(

If your real life was a fictional character, what would you, the main character, be like?
I’d be a lot like Alessa, just a few years older and in a happier (albeit more boring) place!

What book have you read too many times to count?
Pride and Prejudice. It’s my go-to book whenever I want to curl up with something warm and fuzzy (other than my cat).

What is the best piece of writing advice you ever received?
Not to worry about writing the BEST BOOK EVER and just to write a good book that someone out there will enjoy. That took a lot of pressure off!

If you could hop into the life of any fictional character, who would it be and why?
Anyone from Harry Potter – I could never pass up the chance to live in that world!

What was one of the most surprising things you learned in creating your books?
That writing the book isn’t even half the battle! SO much time goes into marketing a book – I really had no idea. Oh, and how important reviews are. I rarely wrote them before I became an author, but now I always do since I know how much books need them to succeed.

What do you like to do when you're not writing?
I’m addicted to wayyy too many TV shows (The Vampire Diaries, American Horror Story, and The Bachelor are probably the ones I most look forward to each week), and I love to read and just spend time with family and friends.

Are any of the things in your books based on real life experiences or purely all imagination?
Yes, definitely! Luckily none of the big scary things (like losing your parents like Alessa did, or living through an apocalypse…), but small things, for sure. In Stitch in particular, I drew heavily from my college experience to build the setting, and I always base my descriptions (like the feel of being outside, the wondrousness of eating mac & cheese after a long day, that sort of thing) on personal experience. I try to include small details to make the story more real, which a lot of readers have commented really helped them to feel like they were there right alongside Alessa.

The Blurb:
Her heart races, her muscles coil, and every impulse in Alessa's body screams at her to run... but yet she's powerless to move.

Still struggling to find her footing after the sudden death of her parents, the last thing college freshman Alessa has the strength to deal with is the inexplicable visceral pull drawing her to a handsome ghostly presence. In between grappling with exams and sorority soirees - and disturbing recurring dreams of being captive in a futuristic prison hell - Alessa is determined to unravel the mystery of the apparition who leaves her breathless. But the terrifying secret she uncovers will find her groping desperately through her nightmares for answers.

Because what Alessa hasn't figured out yet is that she's not really a student, the object of her obsession is no ghost, and her sneaking suspicions that something sinister is lurking behind the walls of her university's idyllic campus are only just scratching the surface...

The opening installment in a twist-laden trilogy, Stitch spans the genres of paranormal romance and dystopian sci-fi to explore the challenges of a society in transition, where morality, vision, and pragmatism collide leaving the average citizen to suffer the results.

Meet the Author: Jena Leigh

Jena Leigh is the author of The Variant Series. We are thrilled to have her here with us today to answer a few questions for us!

authorHow long have you been writing?
For almost as long as I can remember! It started with the diaries that I kept, turned into an addiction to writing fan-fiction, and then one day I felt confident enough to start writing characters and stories of my own creation.

What inspired you to write your first book?
If we’re getting technical, my first book was an eight-page, illustrated masterpiece about a bunny that lost his sock. That was inspired mostly by my desire to do well on a first-grade English assignment.

As for my first published book… Well, that would be Revival. The inspiration for the Variant Series came from many different places, but the original spark arrived in the form of a phoenix drawn into the foam on my latte one morning. I spent the next half hour writing out a scene where a girl was being chased through a burning bookstore. That scene would eventually become the opening scene of Chapter Four.

When you first started writing Revival, did you plan for it to be a series?
Not initially. About halfway through, I realized that Alex’s story wasn’t one that could be told in a single novel. I’m having so much fun writing these characters, though, that I don’t mind! Alex’s world is a wonderful place to get lost in. I’m looking forward to writing about more of her adventures!

Which of your characters do you relate to most and why?
It’s a toss-up between Alex and Kenzie. Growing up, I was a lot like Alex is at the beginning of Revival. I was the quiet one on the sidelines—the one who had a hard time saying “no” to people… At least, that’s how I used to be. At this point in my life I think I’ve become a bit more like Kenzie. Not only have I developed a healthy appreciation for snarky comebacks over the years, I’m also much more inclined to stick up for myself. Also, I would probably die without my morning (and afternoon, and evening…) coffee.

What is a secret about you that nobody else knows?
I can swing dance like nobody’s business.

What book have you read too many times to count?
Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman. I fell in love with that book in less than ten pages and before I finished I had a new favorite author. That was ten years ago. Today, I’m still in awe of Gaiman’s writing style and enchanted by his story of Door and Richard Mayhew and their adventures in a world beneath the world. Whenever I want a fun read and a quick escape from reality, Gaiman’s Neverwhere is the book I usually reach for.

What is the best piece of writing advice you ever received?
The best advice I ever received was simply to live my life—to get out and experience the world. Writing often is crucial to improving your work, but it’s also important not to lose yourself in the written word and the lives of your characters to the point that you miss out on your own life. To quote J.K. Rowling’s Albus Dumbledore: “It does not do to dwell on dreams and forget to live.” The most fabulous adventures could be out there, just waiting for you, and you never know what might inspire your next story!

If you could hop into the life of any fictional character, who would it be and why?
Speaking of J.K. Rowling… I’ve always wanted to wake up one day in Harry Potter’s world. Hogwarts, magic, butterbeer and excitement! Now that’s a world I’d love to live in! If I could be any character, it would probably be Hermione. I admire her quick wit, independence, her fierce loyalty toward friends and her strength. She’s wonderful!

What was one of the most surprising things you learned in creating your books?
That anything is possible if you set your mind to it. Before last year, being an author was something I’d only ever dreamed of doing. It was a persistent dream, but one that I thought would always be far, far out of my reach… And then, one day, I just made up my mind to do it anyway.

I worked endless hours on the first Variant Series book, poured my heart and soul (and sanity) into getting it just right, queried agents, worked for ages on perfecting Revival’s cover, and then (after months of research) I self-published the work. Now, despite the odds, I’ve made that dream I thought would always be out of my reach come true. And I couldn’t be happier!

What do you like to do when you're not writing?
I love to travel! Every chance I get, I head out on a road trip or hop on a plane to someplace new. I’m always happiest when I’m exploring some new city, convinced that the next fun, new experience could be waiting for me just around the corner…

Are any of the things in your books based on real life experiences or purely all imagination?
It’s a mixture of the two. The real life experiences that influence my writing often do so in a roundabout way. None of it is entirely real. Everything has been twisted and remade to fit the story. Facts and places, my own memories and experiences—they’re all a combination of truth and fiction, reshaped to tell a bigger story.

About the Author:
Born and raised in Tampa, Florida, Jena Leigh spent ten years in the mountains of North Carolina before returning home to the lightning capital of North America. A shameless geek, she loves bad sci-fi movies, Skittles, writing cracktastic e-mails to friends and taking shenanigan-filled road trips to faraway concerts. She has a degree in English from Appalachian State University. REVIVAL is her first novel.

Book Review of Gifted: A Donovan Circus Novel by Liz Long

Gifted (A Donovan Circus Novel #1) by Liz Long
Genre: New Adult (Paranormal/Fantasy Romance)
Date Published: May 1, 2012
Publisher: Self

Even in a world of freaks, being a Firestarter is considered a dangerous Gift.

Lucy was born with the ability to create and control fire. She longs to leave the human world for one filled with Earthshakers, Transporters, and Chameleons, to name a few. When she rejoins the circus, it’s everything she hoped it could be—new friends, a potential love interest or two, and a place where she can be herself.

When troupe members begin turning up dead, however, Lucy is suspected of foul play. She must not only prove her innocence but also realize the full extent of her power. To find the real murderer, she must uncover the truth behind her father’s fiery legacy while figuring out whom to trust within her new circle. Little does she know the history of the Donovan Circus and its enemies might actually destroy the entire gifted world.

Gifted is the first Donovan Circus Novel by Liz Long. This story had humor, action, romance, mystery... everything I like to find in a story. Lucy is a wonderful character. She's strong and independent with a funny temper. She is looking for a sense of family, and when she finds it she is loyal to a fault. Her character is well built, and you feel like you really know who she is as a person. Her love interests, Keegan and Gabriel couldn't be more different from each other. Keegan is a sweetheart while Gabriel is the bad boy. Of course, I fell for the bad boy. I'm really looking forward to reading future books in this series, and I'm a little nervous too. The author stated on her website: "I plan for each book to be stand-alone; while certain characters and settings will remain the same, the story/plot will be different, including additions (or subtractions–gasp!) of new characters." I get very attached to characters. I am excited about meeting new characters and going new places though. This is a book I highly recommend! Gifted enveloped me within its pages so completely, I felt like I was the one who ran away with the circus.

Gifted: A Donovan Circus Novel by Liz Long was provided to me by the author for review. The opinions are my own.
