Meet the Author: Sarah Ross

I'm super excited to have Sarah Ross with us today! She's the author of the Patronus Series and Earth Angel Series.

authorHow long have you been writing?
I’ve only been writing seriously since college, but I’ve been telling stories since I was a kid.

What inspired you to write your first book?
I woke up one morning and the first half of the story was just there, screaming to come out. I didn’t dream it, it was just there. It was a Saturday in July and I remember telling my hubby that I had the greatest idea and I just had to write it down. I sat and wrote almost 8,000 words that day.

Which of your characters do you relate to most and why?
I don’t know. I think there’s a little bit of me in all of my characters, otherwise I wouldn’t envision them the way I do. According to my mom and sister though, they think I’m just like Lucy.

What is a secret about you that nobody else knows?
If I told, it wouldn’t be a secret any more :P

What book have you read too many times to count?
I’ve read Romeo and Juliet so much I have most of the play memorized.

What is the best piece of writing advice you ever received?
My favorite writing advice came from my friend Colleen Hoover actually. In her book Slammed, she quoted an awesome poem about writing. I printed it out and hung it in my office and read it every day. I’ll include it for you.

If you could hop into the life of any fictional character, who would it be and why?
Oh, wow. That’s a hard one. Sooo many of the fictional characters go through soo much strife and turmoil. Their lives are messy, because authors love to write conflict. So I’d have to pick based on their male lead. So I guess I’d want to be Mac from Karen Marie Moning’s Fever series. *Mmm… Barrons….*

Or Rose from Vampire Academy *Sigh, Dimitri*

Or Nora from Hush, Hush *Oh Patch…*

Seriously, there are too many to choose!!!

What was one of the most surprising things you learned in creating your books?
I’m surprised how much I use certain words! My editor pointed them out to me, and I couldn’t believe how much I repeat them! For example, I did a search of my rough draft of Awaken for the word “just”. I ended up deleting over 300 extraneous ones!!

What do you like to do when you're not writing?
READ! I am a voracious reader (over 100 books so far this year). I also love going to the beach and swimming

Are any of the things in your books based on real life experiences or purely all imagination?
There are a lot of little things (and a few big things) from my real life that I throw in my books. The biggest one would be my sister, Jessica. Yes, I have an actual younger sister named Jessica who is a cancer survivor.

Some of the little things are just funny stories from my real life (like in Avenge when Lucy talks about falling over the painted line? Yeah, I actually did that in high school. And the story about how Mr. Leonard asked the nurses to help fold their panties? Yeah, that’s actually how I met my friend Matt in college!
