Across the Universe (Across the Universe #1) by Beth Revis
Genre: Young Adult (Science Fiction/Fantasy)
Date Published: January 11, 2011
Publisher: Razorbill

A love out of time. A spaceship built of secrets and murder.

Seventeen-year-old Amy joins her parents as frozen cargo aboard the vast spaceship Godspeed and expects to awaken on a new planet, three hundred years in the future. Never could she have known that her frozen slumber would come to an end fifty years too soon and that she would be thrust into the brave new world of a spaceship that lives by its own rules.

Amy quickly realizes that her awakening was no mere computer malfunction. Someone—one of the few thousand inhabitants of the spaceship —tried to kill her. And if Amy doesn't do something soon, her parents will be next.

Now Amy must race to unlock Godspeed's hidden secrets. But out of her list of murder suspects, there's only one who matters: Elder, the future leader of the ship and the love she could never have seen coming.

Across the Universe is the first book in the Across the Universe Trilogy by Beth Revis. I'm on the fence about this book. Mostly because so many things about the beginning didn't seem realistic, and that set the tone for me in reading the rest of the story. Yes, I know! It's fiction, but with this kind of Science Fiction... there has to be believability to it too... in my opinion.

It wasn't a romance, which isn't what I expected, but also not be a bad thing. The love story is brewing though. Which is fine. It's nice to read something not involving insta-love every once in a while. The characters have some growing to do, so I'm glad it's happening slowly.

There were many interesting things about the characters and their world. The way Eldest has chosen to run things is pretty horrible, but functional for his purposes. As I got to know him, I learned, he wouldn't be able to run it any other way... he's simply not strong enough. That's how I interpret him anyway. Elder seems heaps stronger on many levels, even though he too has weaknesses. Yes, these characters are flawed! Which I love! That helps flesh them out more. We don't have perfect people on this ship.

There was something about the very end that is niggling at me. It's a twist of sorts, but I can't say exactly what it was that bothers me because it's the end, and well, that would be a spoiler... but something about it didn't match up to what I'd read earlier in the book. That's all I can say.

Across the Universe definitely has me intrigued. I finished the book happier than when I started it, so I think that's a good thing. Now, I want to know what happens next for these characters and all the others on the ship.
