Tour! A Review of Don't Fall by Rachel Schieffelbein

Don't Fall by Rachel Schieffelbein
Genre: Young Adult (Fantasy Romance/Fractured Fairy Tale)
Date Published: January 1, 2014
Publisher: Swoon Romance

In this contemporary retelling of Rapunzel, seventeen-year-old Anya leads a secluded life in a house on the edge of town with her adopted mother. She doesn't go to public school, doesn't even have a best friend. But Anya doesn't seem to mind. She has her books, her photography, and her daydreams and would do anything to please her mom.

Until one day at the library, the only place Anya is allowed to go alone, she takes a picture of a beautiful boy. Before long she's lying to her mom, and sneaking out to meet Zander. But Zander wants more than a secret romance. If Anya wants to be with the boy of her dreams, she's going to have to risk her relationship with the only other person she's ever cared about.

Don't Fall by Rachel Schieffelbein is a modern day retelling of Rapunzel. This was a pretty quick read and a very cute story. You're given perspectives from both Anya and Zander. The beginning was a little drawn out, but the characters were really just so darn cute. There were no towers, princes, or princesses, but we did have a controlling mother, a charming young man, and a shy girl who loves her books and photography... and cupcakes. Anya's behavior was pretty realistic for someone who's been sheltered from the real world as much as she has. The mother made me so mad throughout the story. Of course, she's supposed to, but there's a different  spin to her that I found interesting and different as compared to other Rapunzel versions. This was an entertaining little coming of age story.
