Book Review: Legend of the Oceina Dragon by J.F. Jenkins

Legend of the Oceina Dragon (The Dragons Saga #1) by J.F. Jenkins
Genre: Young Adult (Fantasy Romance)
Date Published: February 21, 2011
Publisher:  Astraea Press

Darien Oceina is the youngest son of the Great Dragon Lord of the Water. For years he's loved and cherished Tai Dawson from afar. Tai is a simple, ordinary girl who doesn¹t even know Darien exists. On his eighteenth birthday, he chooses her as his wife. But there’s one problem: She thinks his choice means she¹s going to be offered as a sacrifice to the Dragon Lord, but instead, she's forced to move to his home, far away, to give up her life and be his bride.

When she first sees Darien after the ceremony, she doesn’t expect to feel anything but hatred toward him. The two are struggling with the complications of a new marriage when their nation is attacked by a rival dragon species. Together they learn to love one another while they struggle to stay one step ahead in a game where the prize is their survival.

Legend of the Oceina Dragon in the first book in The Dragons Saga by J.F. Jenkins. This was a different kind of love story. Darien loves Tai, who he's never officially met until he marries her.  Tai doesn't love him. She doesn't know him. She learns that the Oceina Dragons seem to be hopelessly devoted to their wives, and the longer she's around Darien, and the more she learns about their ways, the more her fondness starts to grow. I thought the process happened kind of quickly for Tai. I understood her reservations in the beginning, but I thought she started to come around a little too quickly. So, I'm not sure I can say she's really in love yet. Also, I really think one of the guys at school is going to give Darien a run for his money. I don't like that guy at all, but I have a feeling Tai might. I wonder why they are still in high school. They are old enough to just be starting college, plus the book says that going to school is optional for them at this time. If I were Tai, I would want to learn more about my new surroundings rather than starting at a brand new school on top of all the other new-ness.

I enjoyed this take on dragons. It was unique and creative. There are four different types of dragons. They each have their own regions they govern and many different customs. There's something going on too. I'm not sure what just yet, but something is definitely stirring among the other dragon tribes. I'm glad this is a series because there is so much more I want to know about these dragons. They're pretty interesting.
